Commencement of Breakfast Component of the National School Meals Program

The Ministry of Education is proud to announce the launch of the breakfast component of the National School Meals Program, ensuring that over 1,500 students at public primary schools across Antigua and Barbuda will now receive nutritious breakfasts daily.

This milestone marks another significant step in the government’s ongoing commitment to the holistic development and well-being of our nation’s children.

This new initiative complements the existing school lunch program, which already provides meals to more than 4,000 students each day. Together, these programs represent a comprehensive approach to addressing food insecurity, improving academic performance, and promoting healthier lifestyles for our students.

Minister of Education, the Hon. Daryll Matthew, expressed his enthusiasm for the program’s expansion, stating, “A child who begins the day with a balanced breakfast is better equipped to focus, learn, and thrive in the classroom.

By adding breakfast to the National School Meals Program, we are making an investment not only in the health and well-being of our children but in the future of our nation.”

The breakfast program will feature nutritious options carefully designed to meet the dietary needs of young learners.

By prioritizing local produce and suppliers, the initiative will also support the agricultural sector and stimulate economic growth.

The Ministry extends its gratitude to the hardworking staff of the School Meals Division, parents, teachers, and community partners who have worked tirelessly to make this vision a reality.

This initiative underscores the government’s unwavering dedication to ensuring that no child starts their school day hungry, reinforcing our collective responsibility to nurture and empower the next generation.

  1. The School meals program needs a nutritionist on staff. Sweet drinks and white bread are not healthy. Good habits should start in childhood. Also why the imported apples? This could be an opportunity to engage the farmers via the Ministry of Agriculture to provide actual fresh healthy food while supporting local agriculture and sustainable development/nation building. We need to think differently and really consider the future of our nation which needs healthy citizens to support our development.

    • well tell dem fu come by you and pick arf arl you sugar apple and guava to give to the school children nuh!!!

  2. Reply to Zig. Yawn. Criticise everything. It has just started. They have started with what is readily available. Local fruits in season will be served when available. Don’t you think there are people in the system who know about healthy life styles?

  3. The breakfast initiative is a very good idea, but there needs to be more consistency. Yesterday, a beautiful breakfast was provided, but today it’s just a small bowl of oats that looks unappetizing, almost like vomit. We can and must do better than that!

  4. 😅😅 Well my people are in a class by themselves. The programme started yesterday and it was critisized for serving white bread and imported apples. Today they were served oatmeal porridge and it was critisized for looking “almost like vomit.” 😅😅😅

  5. @Not So Common.
Lol, that’s the best you could do? The head sweats as well.
    @Zig & @Wooooow!!!!
People like you “sick me tummuck”
Who the hell are you people?
What do you do for the furtherance of progress in Antigua?
How about, “Congrats, it’s a great initiative.”?
This country will always be a few steps behind with detractors like you. Give your children breakfast, and don’t depend on the government. That’s if you have any children. You make horrible parents with this stinking thinking.
