Closed Season For Queen Conch

(EAG)

Wednesday marked the beginning of the closed season for queen conch in Antigua and Barbuda.

This closed season coincides with their breeding season, thus giving them an opportunity to replenish their population. Immature conchs – those with shells under 7 inches in size – must not be harvested, no matter the time of year.

Remember that consuming, buying, selling, and catching conch can result in a fine of up to $50,000.

Consider purchasing #lionfish as a seafood alternative during these months.

Fun fact! Conchs can produce natural pearls. These pearls are very rare, and ones of gem quality even more so.
