City South Municipal Foundation Inc., a nonprofit organization registered in Antigua & Barbuda is proud to announce the launch of “Green Lots Initiative,” an innovative program designed to foster entrepreneurship while revitalizing the community.
This initiative provides landscape entrepreneurs with access to discounted landscaping equipment rentals in exchange for their commitment to cleaning and maintaining vacant lots throughout Antigua and Barbuda, starting in the St. John’s City South community.
The Green Lots Initiative aims to address two critical community challenges: providing support for aspiring landscaping entrepreneurs and improving the appearance and safety of neglected properties.
By combining these goals, the program creates a win-win scenario that promotes local economic growth and environmental stewardship.
According to a study done in Philadelphia by Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, cleaning up vacant lots lead to less crime, more socializing outdoors and increased perceptions of safety in the surrounding neighborhood.
How It Works:
• Support for landscaping entrepreneurs: New and aspiring business owners in the landscaping and property maintenance sector can rent professional-grade equipment at significantly reduced rates through the program.
• Community Impact: In exchange for these discounted rentals, participants are tasked with cleaning and beautifying vacant lots identified by the City South Municipal Foundation Inc.
• Long-Term Benefits: The initiative encourages skill-building and business growth while transforming unused spaces into cleaner, safer, and more attractive areas for community use.
“Our vision with Green Lots Initiative is to empower micro business owners while simultaneously improving our neighborhoods,” said Franz deFreitas Executive Director of the City South Municipal Foundation Inc.
“This program demonstrates that collaboration and creativity can solve multiple community challenges at once.”
In addition to the discounted equipment rentals, the City South Municipal Foundation Inc.
will provide participants with resources such as training workshops, networking opportunities, referrals and guidance on growing their businesses.
The Green Lots Initiative is made possible through the generous support from community partners and local sponsors committed to fostering entrepreneurship and community development.
The initial pieces of equipment have already been donated by Paddy Simon of Simon Small Engine and Repairs and the Living in Peace Platform, an Antiguan and Barbudan family group living in the United States.
The equipment will be cared for and regularly serviced and maintained by Paddy Simon of Simon Small Engine and Repairs.
Landscaping equipment of any kind, new and gently used are being kindly solicited from those who can donate to our nonprofit organization at home and in the diaspora.
How to Apply:
The program is now accepting applications from eligible entrepreneurs.

How come Cutie never think of these initiatives with that big head of his, just get rid of that blight
Hopefully, this program is well-managed and doesn’t fade away like others before it.
Will there be funding or training for the entrepreneurs involved?
More projects like this are needed to uplift and revitalize our neighborhoods.
Initiatives such as these are always beneficial to neighborhoods to Communities to KULCHA.
Speaking from experience, and being involved in these types of projects for the past thirty plus years formerly but began as a child on my grandparents farms in Antigua, it’s an absolute pleasure.
This past Monday, Feb 17th, ‘25, US Senator Angela Alsobrooks came to Johnston Square, East Baltimore City, MD ( to those who are familiar with the TV Series, #THE WIRE, Johnston Square was a part of that Script, on steroids); Senator Alsobrooks came to Johnston Square, to reason with Us, as a Community, to gain insights, as to the “how’s & why’s” did we turn this Community, about the size of St. John’s City South, around from being one of the worst in America with gun violence, murders, robberies, drug etc, NEGATIVITY which causes blight and decay, to become the POSTER CHILD of GENTRIFICATION, in Baltimore and Maryland. So much so, that as a US SENATOR, she’ll be using Our Beloved Community, as a model for her NATIONAL PLATFORM, on URBAN REVITALIZATION, in America.
You can see these works, in Johnston Square, by visiting us on Social Media…
I…Re_Build Johnston Square Community Association. Guided by Mrs. Regina Hammond.
II…Re-Build Metro – The Non-Profit Development Group.
III…Open_Works – An INCUBATION CENTER for Entrepreneurs, Community Center and Family gatherings.
IV…The Mura Street Garden on Vere Edwards Facebook Page.
Baltimore City along with Re-Build Metro, the ENOCH PRATT FREE LIBRARY and major funders are building a state of the art LIBRARY and Development Center (the first in this neighborhood and the first in Baltimore in 18 years); a part of a Community Complex with MIX INCOME (very important to true and stable gentrification, of any Community versus the Total Displacement Model).
Therefore, I can relate to these types of initiatives but, the Course is not always #Smood_Sailing! Just hold, that keel steady!
