Chinese National Convicted of Arson Faces Deportation Amid Safety Concerns

Chinese national Tianzhao ‘Alex’ Feng, convicted of setting fire to the XPZ supermarket in 2021, is facing deportation to China after serving a 14-month prison sentence.

Feng’s attorney, Wendel Robinson, will hold important discussions with him this week to determine his decision on whether to remain in Antigua or return to China.

Plans are being finalized for Feng’s deportation, with an immigration official and two other Chinese nationals accompanying him back to mainland China in the coming days.

However, Feng, currently in the custody of the Immigration Department, fears for his safety if he returns to his homeland.

Feng pleaded guilty to arson after the fire at XPZ supermarket caused extensive damage and job losses.

Despite the severity of the crime, Feng garnered public sympathy due to the revelation of his inhumane working conditions and abuse, which he claimed motivated his actions.

Robinson intended to seek asylum for Feng to enable him to stay in Antigua.

The Minister of Immigration, Steadroy Benjamin, has been approached for comment on the matter.

  3. Why is this foreign criminal still in Antigua? Foreign miscreants are not entitled to asylum. He should be deported posthaste!

  4. In China there is a very high likelihood that they will beat and torture Alex and then kill him. They are not known to give a damn about human rights or lives. I can’t imagine that the human rights council in the United Nations would condone sending Alex back to China. The American Embassy would not approve either.
Antigua of late appears to always be involved in some sort of scandal that sullies up our reputation in the outside westernized world. Do something commendable for once and offer this abused (slave) man asylum. Do not send him back to, almost guaranteed, torture and death in China. Remember that credible word said that Alex was also beaten because he had a black girlfriend and we all know how racist the Chinese are!!!! To allow China to dictate the outcome of this would be obvious corruption, spineless and a disgrace.
