A Chinese investment group, with an interest in Antigua and Barbuda, that operates successfully out of Singapore, was invited to Cabinet.

The company generates monthly revenues of $100 Million US and is seeking a foothold in the twin island-state, as an operating base in the Caribbean.

The principal is of the view that AI (Artificial Intelligence) is the next big change in technological innovation, since it will provide more communication power in the future.

The firm assembles electronic vehicles in Mexico for export to North and South America.

The principal was asked if Antigua could be considered for assembling vehicles; after receiving assurances of sufficient energy production, he deemed the prospect of such manufacturing in Antigua to be good.

The group is scheduled to return to the Prime Minister’s Office to follow-up with several Cabinet members whose portfolios coincide with the Investor’s interest.

  1. Here we go again . I’m wondering if this is the same Chinese group that is using Antigua as a washing machine to wash dirty monies . soon and very soon the sh t will hit the fan and the outcome is not going to be too nice .

  2. Here we go yet again!!!! Do I smell money??? For whose pockets? Will the Chinese be given another piece of Crabbs? Antiguans may soon have to acquire boats to live on…. And we may have more people going missing… Lawd!!! Help arwe!!!

  3. Why the negative? Can’t we wait and see what the proposed agreement will be? We can’t depend on tourism alone, jobs and other will be created but let’s pray proper investigation and detailed analysis of proposed terms and conditions be beneficial for the people of the nation. I pray the PM and those in charge will seek legal counsel to help us in this process.

    LOL!!!!!!!

  5. In order to compete with Mexico the salaries for this factory will have to be almost non-existent

  6. @my 2c. Was just about to write the same thing as soon as I read this article.. 😂. How many Antiguan’s are going out to this factory to work for $5 an hour, because that’s the only way they can turn a profit ( by bringing all those parts from China) with very very cheap labor, and working 12 hr shifts.

If Antigua is going to resort to China’s labor practices and slave driven market, then go right ahead Gatson Browne, because we all know you are a sell-out anyway.

    What a joke.

  7. The EV industry is taking a huge nose dive right now. Tesla is failing in the US mostly due to not enough charging stations and unreliable generic type of charging stations that are repeatedly breaking down or having multiple other problems. Also the current EV’s take up to 2 hours to charge, so if you don’t have a charging unit from home it’s a nightmare. The batteries that are used in EV’s cause as much damage to the environment as fossil fuels, maybe more. People in the US are worried about the long range capacity of EV’s most see it as unreliable so EV’s have a long way to go, Car dealership’s are refilling their showrooms back up with regular fuel driven vehicles. EV’s are one big red herring! The EV’s needs more advancement in many ways before countries can switch fully, so this technology is still very much in it’s infancy… Facts…

    • While you may have some facts about EVs in the USA, you are not correct regarding the world wide sale of EVs. The USA has long been an opponent to EVs and only recently the political powers have been pushing EVs. If the USA government really pushed EVs, then you would have lots more charging stations.

In Canada, EV sales grew by nearly 50% in 2023 over the previous year. Also, check the stats in Europe and places like China where sales have been increasing.

I would be happy if the deal with the Chinese becomes a positive one and the people of Antigua would be able to purchase an EV for a great price.

Generally I find our people are very negative when it comes to China. If they said an American company, then it would have been all praises. Guess what, America does not appear interested in helping us. I wish our people would stop believing the negative propaganda. Maybe you guys should search Youtube for some of the mega projects going on in China and you would see where China is really heading and what they can do.

  8. How many Asian villages dem ALP fools going to inflict on Antigua people? Lard, call de election now!

  9. The EV critics here are all behind the curve. A new EV factory will be 90% manned by robots so the cost of manpower is of no consequence.
The latest solid state batteries charge from 30% to 80% in 15 minutes and hold twice the power of current batteries with half the weight and they last 1 million kilometers.
EV factories are BIG! I mean really really HUGE.
    According to groq –
The total area of the Tesla factory in Berlin is approximately 300,000 square meters (3.2 million square feet). This includes the production area, office space, and other facilities. The factory is located in the Berlin-Brandenburg region, specifically in the town of Grünheide, and it serves as the main production site for Tesla’s electric vehicles in Europe
So try to imagine a building that’s 1 kilometer long and 300 meters wide!
The Tesla factory daily water consumption is not publicly known but is estimated to be 1. 5 million gallons per day.
The daily power consumption of Teslas Berlin factory is not publicly known but according to groq –

Therefore, the Tesla Berlin factory might use around 175,000 kWh of electricity per day, assuming similar electricity consumption patterns as other industrial facilities of similar size. However, it’s important to note that this is just a rough estimate and the actual electricity consumption could be higher or lower, depending on various factors such as production processes, equipment efficiency, and energy-saving measures.
So that’s just a mere 175 Megawatt hours of power each and every day.
I think Antiguas total production capacity now is about 60 Megawatts so a Tesla factory would use up all the power that Antigua can produce daily within 3 hours.
How exactly is that going to work?

  10. Are y’all that dumb..sorry for the name, but this is simple math.. Antigua doesn’t have the capacity to be a “Mega city” that Gatson Browne and the Chinese are trying to make it into. The huge problem here is logistics and an abundance of natural resources. For one Antigua does not have water, and enough resources to sustain the kind of growth that Gatson Browne and Co is seeking to do.
To make these kinds of moves, a huge amount of money has to be first spent on infrastructure, food sources, sustainable energy in order to facilitate these types of enhancements.
Someone on here was saying that the advancement that China has made in their country is noteworthy, that is true, but what do China has that Antigua and many places don’t have? An abundance of natural resources, as in water for one, and many forms of minerals and natural resources, and they paid for these projects by maximizing those resources..such like the many hydro plants they have built all over the place to support and feed it’s people.

We have nothing to sell and make money, so there is no way we can compete with other islands and countries for that matter. Check Guyana for instance..what do they have, land, minerals, and liquid gold.

Chasing these pipe dreams are just that for Antigua, pipe dreams. Stick to what we know, and enhance that, and that’s the tourist industry.. even the Arabs are moving into the tourist industry, because it’s low risk earnings. Spending money on things that are not proven,is a huge mistake by this government, and they seems to love to chase pipe dreams.
