Farmers in Antigua and Barbuda will receive training in modern irrigation methods under a China-backed initiative.

The three-week course, running from 16 October to 5 November at the Villa Polyclinic, will focus on water-saving techniques to improve crop production in drought-prone conditions.

The programme is part of the China Aid initiative and is being delivered in partnership with the Chinese Embassy, Yuan Long Ping High-Tech Agriculture Co, and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Chief Extension Officer Owolabi Elabanjo said the training will help strengthen food security. Farmers can register through the Agricultural Extension Division.

  1. Strange when the Israelites came her and started the Melon farms that is what they taught the farmers to do. Drip irrigation. But you think our hard headed farmers will learn? No the will resort back to their own way and complain about water scares. I mean you can take a horse to the well but you cannot make it drink. I can only hope that our young upcoming farmers are more susceptible to new the new agriculture technologies. These days people do not even grow certain crops in the ground. A farm in many countries is like a glass house and everything in on tables and computerized. Soil is hardly used.

  2. Training is good, but what about giving farmers the actual equipment and resources to put these methods into practice? Touching question. Even though I know the government officials won’t answer
