China to Donate 1,800 Solar Street Lights to Antigua and Barbuda
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced that China will donate 1,800 solar-powered street lights to Antigua and Barbuda as part of efforts to modernise the country’s infrastructure.
Speaking on Point FM, Browne said the shipment is expected to arrive within the next two to three weeks and will be installed nationwide. He described the lights as a gift that will enhance public safety while contributing to the government’s wider beautification campaign.
The initiative comes alongside other infrastructure projects, including expanded road works, a national cleanup drive and large-scale tree planting, which Browne said will give Antigua and Barbuda a “new look” within 18 months.

As I said in a previous comment steps must be taken to secure the batteries of these panels otherwise they will soon become another pole for drivers to crash into. A solar panel unit is not something that one should access regularly so there is no reason what a safety until to be built around the battery to prevent theft…unless we lub it so.
Beautification and lighting are great, but I hope they also focus on maintaining these areas once improvements are made.
What do we do with all the poles lying around from the previous set? They built a lot of pedestals and never installed the lights. Many of them the pole is just lying next to it. I’m hoping these ones are the ones with the batteries integrated into the head. Hopefully harder to steal.
Solar lights are the way forward. Good to see the government focusing on energy efficiency.
We have a very poor record of maintenance in Antigua. Just look at the state of the previous street lights that was given to us by the Chinese. They are in a terrible state of disrepair.
Just to put back a pole that was braken, they can’t even find a replacement. A culture of lazyness and incompetent is what goes on in this country
In return we give them unlimited batty ride ..
Here comes the free collection of personal data. China don’t give anything free without getting something in return. Just saying
I hope it’s not going to be a situation like Dominica, where the natives steal the batteries and panels from the posts.
@concerned Google, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft has more personal data than the government can provide about you just saying. If you’re truly concerned about data collection just don’t use the internet or if you do use browsers that aggressively prevent cookies, fingerprinting and use a VPN.
So true. What happened to the last set they installed?
And the thieves are smiling while reading this. It irks me that people donate these things and APUA also invest in them only for people to steal them right off the damn pole after then complain the government this and that
It look like the prime minister is listening, but him been a non technical person got it wrong, that electricity manager at APUA will uselessly let you copy the same mistakes, Mr prime minister, the lights you need out of china are solar powered LED streetlight with camera combination out of china as you are doing, and specify to the Chinese that you need the batteries to be mounted at the top so that they are not stolen like the existing set a solar lamps, and the camera system is sim card equipped, get our inet engineer to indicate the sim card specifications compatibility. I give this advise for my country to help deter crime, I wouldn’t play partisan politics with the love I have for my country, I offer my expertise to you.
Time will tell
We’ve been down this road before. And just like the last time, I ask once again….are these solar lights sufficiently hurricane resistant? The last time we put them up we got hit by a storm not long after. It wiped out most of that infrastructure in just hours. So I ask once again. Are these hurricane resistant…this time??
Great news and an amazing donation from the Chinese government, 🇨🇳 however the only fly 🪰 in the ABLP’S (and Gaston Browne’s) ointment 🧉 is that Antigua over the last 10-11 years have received many donations to help out the country, only for Browne and Co to let these donations go to rack and ruin, because of a lack of parts when things go wrong; a definite lack of training to make good any repairs, and let’s not forget the distinct lack of qualified technicians, engineers, diagnostic staff and mathematicians.
Hopefully, if Browne receives any more future donations, he’ll ensure we have enough technical backup for Antigua & Barbuda 🇦🇬 to enjoy for decades to come.
Get ready my fellow critical thinkers, here comes ABLP “member” @ Teacher For Life to defend the indefensible once again.
In 3, 2, 1 … BOOM 💥
@ the person who ask if lights are good for hurricane:
The APUA need administrative reform, during a hurricane approach these solar panels has to be removed, the Apua need to have stand by workers like other utility companies or like the army does, even the solar panels on roofs need to be removed, it’s an arduous task.
The APUA electricity manager has fail that company over and over, those lights solar panels should have been removed.
