China to Donate 1,800 Solar Street Lights to Antigua and Barbuda

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced that China will donate 1,800 solar-powered street lights to Antigua and Barbuda as part of efforts to modernise the country’s infrastructure.

Speaking on Point FM, Browne said the shipment is expected to arrive within the next two to three weeks and will be installed nationwide. He described the lights as a gift that will enhance public safety while contributing to the government’s wider beautification campaign.

The initiative comes alongside other infrastructure projects, including expanded road works, a national cleanup drive and large-scale tree planting, which Browne said will give Antigua and Barbuda a “new look” within 18 months.

  1. As I said in a previous comment steps must be taken to secure the batteries of these panels otherwise they will soon become another pole for drivers to crash into. A solar panel unit is not something that one should access regularly so there is no reason what a safety until to be built around the battery to prevent theft…unless we lub it so.

  2. What do we do with all the poles lying around from the previous set? They built a lot of pedestals and never installed the lights. Many of them the pole is just lying next to it. I’m hoping these ones are the ones with the batteries integrated into the head. Hopefully harder to steal.

  3. We have a very poor record of maintenance in Antigua. Just look at the state of the previous street lights that was given to us by the Chinese. They are in a terrible state of disrepair.

Just to put back a pole that was braken, they can’t even find a replacement. A culture of lazyness and incompetent is what goes on in this country
