Chamber of Commerce Alarmed After Murder of Businessman Charlie Barnes

The Antigua and Barbuda Chamber of Commerce has warned of growing insecurity for businesses following the murder of George ‘Charlie’ Barnes.

Barnes, who owned Charlie’s Service Station, was shot dead outside his Nugent Street home late on Friday night. Police said an unidentified gunman confronted him as he returned home and shot him in the chest. He died at the scene.

Chamber Executive Director Martin Cave said the killing has left the business community shaken. “We’re seeing the scourge of crime and violence mar the image of Antigua as a safe, tranquil place. The business community is in a state of unrest,” he said.

His colleague, Director Celia Samuel, described the murder as a wake-up call. “If they could do that to Charlie, then they could do that to anybody else,” she said.

The Chamber noted that the attack follows the fatal shooting of businessman Roudi Shmali and a recent armed robbery staged through a bogus roadblock.

Both officials extended condolences to Barnes’ family, employees and customers, while urging urgent attention to security.

  1. This is like a big joke. You did not realize that we are not safe and other persons don’t feel safe in this country so because it hit home your eyes open wide for you to realize that nobody is safe?Okay welcome to our club

  2. Wow I can’t believe someone would actually say something concerning politics to this post…..wake to hell up…..not because it’s real doesn’t mean it should not be brought under control by any means necessary

  3. Business owners should be able to get there gun license easier with these kind of things going on robbers should be scared too

  4. They finally feel what we’ve been feeling for all these years, always waiting for something to happen for them to act like they’re concerned it been happening for years.

  5. When oh when is Prime Minister Gaston Browne going to address or responded to the nations heartfelt pleas in the ongoing rise in gun crimes, criminality or murders in the country?

He talks about everything else under the sun but this; and he normally has so much to say. I’m baffled!

Just asking on behalf of concerned citizens.

Gaston Browne’s continuous BAVARDAGE of foolish and empty chatter on other topics only confirms what we’ve all thought about his reluctance to address criminality is simply that he DOESN’T clue as to what to do.

Dear Lord 🙏🏾 please intervene and help Antigua & Barbuda 🇦🇬

  6. Condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace.
I’m asking out loud, where are all these guns coming from ? I also told myself a person who confronts another who is carrying a gun is going to act before the other dose ! This is getting worse by the second and we’re not safe even in our homes . Some cannot be praying while the others are out there reeking havoc and behaving like they are in title to…..
