Centenarian’s Day Message from the Governor General

3

On this occasion of Centenarian’s Day 2023, Lady Williams and I extend our warmest greetings to the citizens and residents of Antigua and Barbuda.

Today, June 8. has been especially set aside in this week of celebration to come together to acknowledge the remarkable lives and invaluable contributions of our treasured centenarians.

As we embark on the 7th annual Centenarian’s Week, we pay tribute to the 23 living centenarians, whose wisdom, resilience, and longevity inspire us all.

Their exceptional journey through time is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and serves as a reminder of the rich heritage and history of our nation.

Together with the Minister and officials in the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Social Transformation, and the Environment, we uphold the tradition of visiting our centenarians on their birthdays.

This cherished practice not only allows us to personally convey our well wishes but also provides an opportunity to express our gratitude for their significant contributions to our society.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Community Development and Citizens Engagement Division, the Department responsible for organizing this week of activities.

Your dedication and commitment to honoring our centenarians through various events are truly commendable.

To our centenarians, you are living treasures, and we are honored to celebrate this special day in your honor.

Your lives have touched countless others, and your legacy will endure for generations to come.

May this day be filled with joy, love, and cherished memories as we join together to pay homage to your remarkable achievements.

May Centenarian’s Day be a source of inspiration for all, reminding us of the boundless strength within each of us and the power of a life well-lived.

We also thank the media for their efforts in making the public aware of our centenarians and their contributions.

Thank you.

  1. Gu way Governor General, your credibility has gone with the wind – go sit down, STEP DOWN and res’ up yourself!

    Retirement can’t come soon enough.

You had an opportunity to put the country and citizens FIRST before your mate Gaston Browne; and you decided on the latter.

    Shame on you!

Where’s your OFF-WHITE suit, MEDIEVAL tabard and ceremonial sword?

We need to be rid of these UNCHALLENGED political group-thinkers …

    • Here comes the Gastonites in 3, 2, 1 … get ready for their awful replies and TAUTOLOGY 😁

  2. ONE THOUGHT OR TWO
Respect and honor to our living-centenarian SGOEs, Senior Grandparents Order of Excellence, including the eternal memories of those who passed over.

Our venerable, noble, native Centenarians descendants of our heroic, enslaved African ancestors had few and no choices within the economic and education systems of colonialism and slavery to earn a living: “Washing, cleaning, working in the canefield and picking cotton.”
Their labor produced the economic wealth and cultural benefits of our colonizers.
Our Centenarians survived by practicing the fundamental economic principle: ” Eat a little, save a little, spend a little.”
And spiritually, they internalized hope of a better life, faith, through religion.

We must know this and NEVER, NEVER, NEVER forget it: Our colonizers planned and implemented successfully their economic and education systems for the purpose of achieving power and control through the accumulation of their economic and financial wealth enforced by their organized cultural ‘superiority’ – laws, Arts, religion, sports, interactions.

Therefore, “a people (especially our youths) without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”
And now, our noble Centenarians ask our youths : “What’s in your hand?” And the answer: cell phone – smartphone, iPhone, tablet – a computer, a ‘walking university’! There’s no admission of guns, items used to harm, terrorize others and destroy themselves in the process.

“All knowledge in the world belongs to everybody in the world.”
Think about this: our youths are leaving our Public Schools after eleven(11) years of instructional education without knowledge and skills to earn a living and start businesses.
Our education system isn’t working! It’s time for a radical change.
Our education system MUST PRIORITIZE STEM – the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics + creative Arts, Pre-K to Tertiary, in the curriculum of EVERY PUBLIC SCHOOL and INSTITUTION, year-round, in-school, extra-curricular programs (after school activities) and summer!
With this education, our youths will be equipped to unlock their creative genius to create, innovate, produce and distribute the goods and services we need for ourselves and the world. That must happen to achieve our economic and social development.
If we do not commit now to a radical change, we face the social consequences from the known risk of creating a permanent underclass of youths, a ‘low class’ without knowledge and skills for college, career and life. They will be financially broke and broken as humans, arrogantly, verbally and in other ways abused.

Let us interact with humility, grace, good intentions! Be nice to each other!

Save our Humanity, Save our Youths, Save our Environment, Save our Soil!!!

    Respect
