Rooted in Gratitude: Celebrating Our Farmers on National Farmers Day by Shenequa Williams

Every December 23rd, Antigua and Barbuda pauses to give thanks, not just for the food on our tables, but for the hands that help it grow. It’s National Farmers Day, and this year, the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and The Blue Economy proudly tips its hat to our nation’s farmers and agro-processors, the tireless stewards of our land and sea who keep us fed, nourished, and thriving.

Farmers are the backbone of our food security, the roots that keep our nation grounded and growing strong. From the rich fields of sweet potatoes to the golden crowns of pineapples shining in our markets, our crop and livestock farmers, along with our agro-processors, continue to grow excellence in every sense of the word.

Farming isn’t all sunshine and soil. The uncertainty of weather, the challenges of praedial larceny, financial strain, and the demands of the market can test even the strongest. Yet, our farmers persevere. They dig deep (sometimes literally), using technology, sustainable practices, and good old-fashioned determination to cultivate success.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a reminder of just how vital our farmers are. When the world slowed down and international supply chains were disrupted, our local producers stood tall. They kept our markets supplied and our tables full, showing that resilience and resourcefulness are truly homegrown virtues.

A strong agricultural sector is about more than planting seeds, it’s about cultivating innovation and sustainability. The future of farming in Antigua and Barbuda lies in blending tradition with technology, ensuring that biodiversity and sustainability go hand in hand with productivity.

The Ministry continues to invest in training, infrastructure, and innovation, but it’s also the public’s awareness, support, and patronage that help our farmers flourish. When we choose local, we choose growth. When we support farmers, we strengthen our nation’s foundation.

To our hardworking farmers, you’ve truly “bean” amazing! Your labour, commitment, and love for the land form the cornerstone of our nation’s well-being. You are more than producers; you are providers, innovators, and caretakers of Antigua and Barbuda’s future.

So today, and every day, we celebrate you. May your fields be fertile, your livestock healthy, and your harvests abundant.

From all of us at the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and The Blue Economy, thank you for helping Antigua and Barbuda grow. You are the real MVPs: Most Valuable Planters!
