My fellow teachers,
Today, we join the global community in celebrating World Teachers’ Day, a day dedicated to honoring the invaluable contributions of teachers to our society. This year’s theme, “Valuing Teachers Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education,” calls upon us to reflect on the pivotal role our educators play in shaping the minds of future generations and building the foundation for a thriving, informed, and innovative nation.
Our teachers are the backbone of our education system, dedicating their time, energy, and talents to nurture the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and innovators. In the face of challenges—whether adapting to new technologies or navigating unprecedented global circumstances—our teachers have demonstrated resilience, commitment, and unwavering passion for the success of their students.
As Minister for Education, Creative Industries, and Sports, I take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each and every teacher across our nation. Your hard work does not go unnoticed. You inspire curiosity, foster creativity, and instill a sense of purpose in our young people, equipping them with the tools to not only succeed academically but also contribute meaningfully to society.
In recent times, teachers have faced the increasingly difficult challenge of dealing with violence in our schools. This issue not only threatens the safety and well-being of both students and teachers but also disrupts the learning environment and undermines the educational process. Teachers often find themselves on the front lines, managing conflicts, de-escalating tensions, and addressing the emotional and psychological needs of students affected by violence. Despite these daunting circumstances, our educators continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience and courage. However, it is imperative that we support them with the necessary resources, training, and interventions to create safe and nurturing school environments. Teachers should not have to carry the burden of school violence alone; it is a collective responsibility that demands action from government, parents, and the wider society.
This World Teachers’ Day, I want to reaffirm your Government’s commitment to supporting our educators. We will continue to provide the resources, professional development, and recognition that they so richly deserve. Our teachers’ growth is directly linked to the growth of our nation, and by empowering them, we ensure the continued progress and prosperity of our future.
To all our teachers, thank you for your dedication, your passion, and your unwavering commitment to excellence. We celebrate you not only today but every day.
Happy World Teachers’ Day 2024!

The schools are short on teachers in several subject areas. The ministry of education already did its part in holding interviews and submitting names to establishment. However it’s clear that education is not a priority since they are saying no money available for salaries to hire new teachers. My take away from this is that we only give lip service about our children education. That most of the candidates that were interviewed were bright young people in their twenties wants to teach as a career. That the government can find money to pay salaries for 80 delinquent salaries but cannot find money to pay salaries to hire teachers. So teachers retire, teachers leave the system and no replacements.
Mr.Minister of education are you aware of this situation? Have you gone to the cabinet and made a presentation on our children behalf? Instead of stop concentrating on photo up’s.
Mr.PM I don’t blame you entirely or know if to blame you at all. Since, I am not sure if the minister informed you and your cabinet or if establishment let you know that the ministry of education submitted names and they cannot hire because of financial issues.
Mr. Pm our education system is deteriorating. Our children especially boys are dropping out of school without any accountability. We are short on teachers. We should not be short on teachers in no subject area. Although we pay attention to maths and English, which we should of course. I just saw a young Antiguan making waves in clothes and another Movies and Jewel in Sports – The youngest Antiguan to be selected to the West Indies senior team. Let’s get our act together in all areas.
The school system is short on teachers. Mr.Minister have you gone to your Cabinet and informed of the problem. Hon. Gaston Browne are you aware of this serious problem.
There should not be short on teachers in any subject area. I myself took certain subjects for granted until this very week I saw a young lady making head line in the fashion industry in Jamaica and then another in Canada in the Film industry. Then Jewel Andrew becoming one of the youngest persons to make the West Indies senior team. The youngest Antiguan for sure. So even the sport / PE teachers are very important . Home Economics teachers are producing chefs – the schools young chefs competition. We need school counselors and I con go on and on. So let’s get our act together.
I want to thank teachers for their service and dedication. You are our true heroes and superstars.
I am reading here that the country is short staff, so I guess my request for certain kind of classes to be taught in schools may be the wrong time to ask?
I really want American Law to be taught locally, in high-school. Make it and elective at minimum, students chose to pick.
