Every April 22, 2025, Antigua and Barbuda will join the global community in observing Earth Day under the theme “Our Power, Our Planet.” This year’s focus emphasizes the urgent need to triple global renewable energy generation by 2030, highlighting the pivotal role of solar, wind, and other clean energy sources in combating climate change.
Earth Day, first celebrated in 1970 making it Fifty-five years old this very special day has evolved into a worldwide initiative involving over a billion people across 192 countries. It serves as a platform to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote sustainable practices.
As a small island nation, Antigua and Barbuda faces unique environmental challenges, including rising sea levels and biodiversity loss. However, in its response, the country has adopted climate education guidelines, joining other island nations in prioritizing environmental awareness and education.
Local organizations and NGOs
like the Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) play a significant role in conservation efforts, such as the Redonda Restoration Project, which focuses on restoring native species and habitats.
Earth Day in Antigua and Barbuda is marked by various community-driven activities:
Educational Outreach: Schools incorporate environmental topics into their curricula, fostering a culture of sustainability among students.
Clean-Up Campaigns: Community members participate in local clean-up events, contributing to the global Great Global Cleanup initiative.
