Story by Lance Gould.
In a world often overshadowed by challenges and uncertainties, the recognition of an outstanding personality can serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Caribbeans often recognize people from the world of sports and the arts, but too infrequently their public-service advocates.
This year, however, as an observer to multiple proceedings occurring in the region, I suggest honoring an individual whose remarkable contributions and unwavering commitment I dare say have left an indelible mark on not only his country, but humanity in general.
Antigua and Barbuda’s UN Ambassador Aubrey Webson embodies resilience and courage. His journey began humbly, in which he faced great adversity, yet transformed his challenges into opportunities.
With a vision that transcends personal ambition, he has dedicated himself to uplifting communities, strengthening the social and economic fabric of individuals and of his island, advocating for social justice, and championing environmental and development sustainability for persons with disabilities, persons in poverty, and his impressive work for SIDS (Small Island Developing States).
At the heart of his impact lies a profound ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and all walks of life.
Ambassador Webson has inspired others by his dedication and commitment to humanity to join the movement for positive change, whether through initiatives such as seeking eye health for all those combating blindness everywhere in the world; collaborative global projects like SIDS4; or globally driven objectives like co-chairing the United Nations resolution on the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI) and bringing that resolution closure after 30 years.
He has also received global, national, and community recognition for his work from such esteemed bodies as the University of the West Indies (Honorary Doctorate in Laws); the International Council on the Education of Children with Visual impairment (ICEVI) in India (lifetime achievement for contribution in the education of children who are blind and those with deaf blindness); and Case Western Reserve University in the United States (induction into their Hall of Fame in Ohio).
He has further addressed international audiences advocating for SIDS, for persons with disabilities, and against needless blindness.
Ambassador Webson’s work this year has not only brought tangible benefits to his country and to those in need, but has also ignited a collective consciousness about new opportunities for Antigua and Barbuda and for the Caribbean, generally, on issues that matter most to their development and survival as small islands.
What really sets Ambassador Webson apart is his authenticity. In a time where many are focused solely on self, accolades and recognition, he remains grounded, prioritizing the voices of the marginalized and encouraging a spirit of inclusivity. He has often said that his voice is a voice for the “silent ones” — the voiceless.
The ambassador’s humility and approachability make him a relatable figure, reminding us that true leadership is about serving others.
As one considers celebrating this outstanding personality of the year, let us reflect on the values he embodies: perseverance, empathy, and the belief that change is possible.
The ambassador’s story serves as a reminder that each of us has the potential to make a difference, no matter how small our actions may be.
