On Tuesday, 14th October, the Central Board of Health (CBH) had the opportunity to participate in a Disaster Management Exhibition hosted by the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) under the theme “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters.”

The event took place at the Multipurpose Cultural Centre, where hundreds of students supervised by their teachers engaged with various agencies showcasing their roles before, during, and after disasters.

During a disaster such as a hurricane, the Central Board of Health pays special attention to many public health areas including food safety, vector control and sanitation. However, for this exhibition, the CBH team focused on the important topic of water safety and hygiene practices.

At one display table, the team demonstrated different methods to make water safe for use, such as boiling, adding unscented household bleach, or using chlorine tablets. It is very important that persons use potable water.

At another display, props were used to highlight the dangers of walking or playing in floodwaters. The team explained that floodwaters can be contaminated by overflowing/damaged septic tanks and pit latrines, which contain harmful germs that can easily enter the body and cause illness.

By visiting the CBH display, participants gained valuable knowledge on how to make water safe for consumption and other use and why it’s important to avoid contact with floodwaters after heavy rains or storms.
