Carty Backs PM Browne’s Push for New Hotel Workers Union, Questions Motives

Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s proposal to establish a new union for hotel workers in Antigua and Barbuda has gained support from former trade unionist Anderson Carty, who agrees that change is necessary due to the Antigua & Barbuda Workers Union’s (ABWU) alleged failures.

Carty accused the ABWU of poor representation and corruption, citing compromised officers and issues with service charge calculations. He acknowledged that Browne had raised these concerns with him on Labour Day but questioned the prime minister’s motives, noting the ABWU’s ties to the opposition.

Last Thursday, union officials and industry partners met with Browne to discuss forming an advisory board for the new union. The prime minister has criticized the ABWU for collecting over $2 million annually from hotel workers while failing to advocate for their needs.

The government has proposed a soft loan to assist the union’s launch, provided it remains politically independent. Further discussions with Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin and Deputy Labour Commissioner Pascal Kentish will address legal aspects of the formation.

  1. I don’t think Mr.Anderson Carty is any better, because he was a part of a certain private security firm, get alot of money to prevent alot of the security workers for winning their cases against the security firm, and even cause alot of security officers to loose their jobs as well…

Any thing Mr.Carty is going to be a part of, will not survive….
