Carnival becoming too expensive for the Treasury says government

Matthew, Carnival Minister

The government is considering a proposal to privatize several carnival shows now organised by the Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission.

The state is considering handing certain shows over to the associations and the performers that benefit from them.

Coming out of this week’s Cabinet meeting the Festivals Minister Daryl Matthew was given the authority to act to implement changes for the 2019 Carnival.

“The cost of funding carnival each year is becoming far too burdensome for the Treasury of Antigua and Barbuda” the government has said.

“Another model—which is sustainable—is to be adopted immediately.”

Cabinet decided that the Festivals Commission will focus upon the weekend leading to last lap, and place major effort in attracting many visitors to Antigua and to the performances during that five-day period.

At last count, close to seven million dollars was owed to carnival service providers and others dating back many years.
