Caribbean Community leaders have welcomed what they described as positive talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the bloc’s 50th heads of government summit.
Mr Rubio delivered a brief address on Wednesday before holding closed-door discussions with leaders at the meeting in Basseterre.
Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, said the tone of the remarks signalled Washington’s willingness to strengthen ties with the region.
“The Caribbean has the largest diaspora in the United States and we are also linked by our common humanity,” he told the Caribbean Media Corporation. He said the statement, though brief, indicated a commitment to enhance relations between the United States and CARICOM.
Mr Browne said more detailed discussions were expected to follow, expressing hope for a “reset” in relations. He said closer cooperation should reflect the vulnerabilities and development needs of Caribbean states, while advancing shared security interests and maintaining the hemisphere as a “zone of peace”.
The summit comes amid shifting geopolitical and economic pressures, with regional leaders seeking stronger partnerships on climate resilience, security, migration and sustainable development.
Further details on the outcome of the talks are expected as the 50th CARICOM summit continues.

Mr. Browne, Rubio wants to know when you plan to shut down the Chinese base.

Since Trinidad & Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar stunning address at the opening ceremony of the Caricom meeting in St.Kitts, the usually vocal and loud voices of the Barbados and Antigua & Barbuda’s Prime Ministers has been noticeably silent and mute.
The meeting more than anything highlighted the abandonment of regional relationships and sovereignty with individual countries pivoting from the communities foreign & security framework. This have literally weakened the collective voice thereby exposing their vulnerability. Caribbean leaders have all but surrendered to external pressures created by the US administration. The justification of the overthrow of the Venezuelan leader and the continued blow up of crafts in our waters were ok’d as well as the squeeze that is being put on Cuba. We also heard about regional kidnapping Now our countries seem more and more open to militarization & unilateralism, abandoning the principles of regional corporation and stability. And for all of her assistance and help, she has been rewarded with a meeting with the “King ” on March 7th in Florida. Only the President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, another US cheerleader, will accompany her
