Caribbean Visitors to Antigua Surpass Canada for the First Time
Caribbean travelers have overtaken Canadian visitors as the third-largest group of tourists to Antigua and Barbuda, according to the latest tourism figures.
The shift comes amid a resurgence in regional travel, supported by improved air connectivity and the return of LIAT.
Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez noted that Antigua and Barbuda continues to experience growth in visitor arrivals, with the Caribbean market now ranking behind only the United States and the United Kingdom.
The increased regional interest has been attributed to greater accessibility and renewed confidence in inter-island travel.
The return of LIAT, which has reintroduced flights across the Eastern Caribbean, is seen as a major factor in the rise of regional visitors. Expanded air links have made it easier for travelers from nearby islands to visit Antigua, either for leisure, events, or business.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the trend, viewing it as a positive development for local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and transport services.
The government has expressed confidence that ongoing improvements in air travel and tourism offerings will sustain the momentum in regional arrivals.
While the Caribbean market is growing, Fernandez acknowledged that external economic challenges, including uncertainty in major source markets like the United States, could impact global travel patterns.
However, he expressed optimism that Antigua and Barbuda’s appeal as a premium destination, coupled with strong regional demand, will continue to support the industry.
