CUT: The Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) celebrated its 90th anniversary and strategised the way forward at its 42nd Biennial Conference.

The Conference adopted a new two-year programme, elected a new Executive Committee, and gave unions the opportunity to discuss and plan the future of the Go Public! Fund Education campaign in the region.

Jointly hosted by the Windward Islands Teachers Union (WITU) and the Anguilla Teachers Union (ATU), the Conference brought together over 100 delegates, observers, and guests on the theme Ninety Years of Unity, Advocacy and Empowerment.

A long history of union solidarity in the Caribbean

The CUT has much to be proud of on its 90th anniversary. In her opening remarks, Nadine Molloy, member of the Education International (EI) Executive Board, highlighted the essence of the CUT’s history: “Ninety years of struggles for decent working conditions, attractive salaries, better infrastructure.

Ninety years of unrelenting dedication to giving the children and young people of the Caribbean the education and the future they deserve. Ninety years of standing up for our rights – for better rights -, for excellence and for equality in education and in society.”

Founded with the mission of uniting teacher organisations in the region, the CUT continues to build solidarity and cooperation among unions.

The CUT elects Sharon Kelsick as President

The CUT’s unifying mission will now be spearheaded by Sharon Kelsick of the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers. Delegates elected Kelsick as President of the Caribbean Union of Teachers during the Conference.

Reflecting on her road to leadership, Kelsick emphasised the essential role of union programmes for young leaders, noting that “at one such program, I was empowered to become an advocate for fair working conditions for educators in my locale.

Six years later, I proudly stand as the second female President of the CUT”.

Kelsick stressed that her experience and the stories of many other unionists in the region speak to the importance of the CUT’s partnerships with international organisations such as Education International, the National Education Association, the American Federation of Teachers, the Canadian Teachers Federation, and many more to come.

The new President concluded by reaffirming the CUT’s commitment to advocating tirelessly for teachers in the Caribbean and invited unionists to “support one another, uplift your peers, and drive progress in your unions”.

More unions to join Go Public! Fund Education campaign

EI’s Go Public! Fund Education campaign has been embraced by education unions across the world, including in the Caribbean. In the region, Go Public! has been launched in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Guyana, and Jamaica.

During the CUT Conference, union leaders from SVGTU, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and JTA, Jamaica presented the campaign strategies they are employing and the progress made in their contexts. Campaign Manager Angelo Gavrielatos also provided participants with a global overview of the campaign and effective strategies used by unions around the world.

Five more unions in the Caribbean are preparing to join the campaign that calls on governments to fully fund public education and teachers, the single most important factor in achieving quality education.
