Caribbean Union Bank is proud to announce Maria Vargas as the 2024 recipient of the annual Amaya Yearwood Memorial Scholarship.
This scholarship was established in memory of our late colleague, Amaya Yearwood, who tragically passed away in October 2020. It honors her legacy by supporting a bright student from her alma mater, the Antigua and Barbuda International Institute of Technology (ABIIT).
Maria, a first-year college student at ABIIT, has a strong passion for Sales and Marketing. Since graduating from high school a year ago, she has remained dedicated to academic excellence and personal growth.
Her love for Sales and Marketing comes from her interest in understanding people’s needs, building connections, and developing creative strategies to bring ideas to life.
Beyond her studies, Maria enjoys cooking, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She sees cooking as a way to express creativity, while traveling has broadened her perspective and deepened her appreciation for different cultures.
Maria values strong relationships and support systems, which keep her grounded as she pursues her academic and career goals.
Receiving the Amaya Yearwood Memorial Scholarship is a tremendous honor for Maria. She expressed her gratitude, saying, “I can see what Amaya meant to CUB, and I am honored to receive this scholarship. I will do my best to make the most of this opportunity.”
The scholarship was presented to Maria in a ceremony held at Caribbean Union Bank’s Starlings Branch. In attendance were Maria, Ornel Walker-Maurice, General Manager of ABIIT, other representatives from ABIIT, and members of the bank’s management and staff.
Caribbean Union Bank remains committed to investing in education and honoring the memory of Amaya Yearwood by supporting the next generation of leaders. We congratulate Maria Vargas and wish her continued success in her studies and future career.

Congratulations 👏
Congratulations to Maria Vargas for being awarded the 2024 Amaya Yearwood Memorial Scholarship! It’s wonderful to see a young individual being recognized for their achievements and given the opportunity to further their education. This scholarship will undoubtedly make a positive impact on Maria’s future. However, while this recognition is deserving, I hope that the bank continues to expand its support for students in other fields of study beyond what’s typically recognized. There’s a wealth of talent in the Caribbean, and we should be celebrating and supporting a broader range of academic pursuits.
This type of support is crucial in helping young people reach their academic and professional goals. That said, I’d love to see more details about how the bank plans to further support its scholarship recipients
