Chief of Staff Lionel “Max” Hurst outlined the government’s plans to rejuvenate a car park that has been abandoned for over 15 years in St. John’s.

Addressing concerns about the structural examination of the car park and its associated costs, Hurst provided detailed insights into the government’s strategy.

Hurst confirmed that the car park has indeed been examined by engineers recently, addressing any safety or structural concerns that may have arisen due to its long period of disuse.

He further explained that the costs of refurbishment and maintenance would be borne by the National Asset Management Company (NAMCO), which oversees various capitalist enterprises operated by the Antigua and Barbuda government.

The primary objective of this revitalization effort, according to Hurst, is to transform the derelict car park into a functional space that contributes to the local economy.

By utilizing dividends received from companies like the West Indies Oil Company, NAMCO aims to fund the refurbishment and repurposing of the car park. This includes plans to install businesses on the uppermost floor, create vendor malls around the outside, and encourage paid parking inside the facility.

Additionally, Hurst emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the aesthetics and functionality of St. John’s, citing concerns about businesses relocating away from the city center.

By repurposing the abandoned car park and discouraging street parking, the government aims to create a more attractive and orderly environment for both pedestrians and businesses.

Hurst acknowledged the challenges posed by the car park’s long-standing neglect and the limitations of demolishing it at this stage. However, he expressed confidence in the government’s ability to maximize its utility and contribute positively to the local community.

The proposed revitalization project is part of broader efforts by the Gaston Browne Administration to enhance urban infrastructure and stimulate economic activity in key areas of Antigua and Barbuda.

  1. Give it to ABLP, they will fix it and make it better. Long Live the ABLP! Once we have the money we will fix what was once wrong and make it right.

  2. So why wait 15yra? Thought it was sinking and all sorts of things…. Oh I get it just give the structure time to settle in the foundation then u can build again😔😔😔…
Well old people say every dog turns back to its vomit the cornerstone the building refuses always becomes the head stone…..

  3. Isn’t this a first for the government to reveal that NAMCO funds will be used for the redevelopment of the car park in St John’s?

After promising to fix this eyesore in 2014, how comes it has taken 10 years to do something?

And yet, you get ABLP acolytes like @ Voice of Reason saying: “Give it to ABLP, they will fix it …”

IT’S OFFICIAL FOLKS, THEY ARE NUTS!

    NURSE!!! 😁

  4. Don’t forget who start the project and bankrupt it before completion. So it doesn’t matter how long it takes to pick up from where they left off, especially since the ALP paid off the debt to the Trinidadian company. We should all celebrate the fact that it’s finally coming to completion for the benefit of the country. An honest person recognise the good being done, rather than always trying to tear down progress….would you like people to criticise and tear down everything you put your hands to do?????
