St. John’s, Antigua: Wednesday, June 25th, 2024: While one group of young footballers returned from Brookhouse College and Ackworth School last Sunday, another set of athletes were in the departure lounge, eagerly awaiting their turn to gain international experience at the prestigious Steven Gerrard Academy.
Five young players—Nazhir Blair, Rolando Kelly, Raheem Lewis, Malik Charles and National U17 player, Jermarion Edwards – all of whom were scouted during the CAF Player ID Combine last January – have been selected to pursue elite development opportunities at the world-renowned Steven Gerrard Academy in the UK. The Combine, a premier scouting event hosted by the Calvin Ayre Foundation (CAF), in partnership with the Generation Next Football Club (GNFC), attracted international attention and spotlighted the impressive depth of local football talent.
“These athletes showed more than just skill; they demonstrated professionalism, discipline, and coachability,” said Jonathan Thoroughgood, Executive Member of GNFC. “Their selection by the Steven Gerrard Academy reflects the true potential of footballers in Antigua and Barbuda.”
According to Jamilla Kirwan, Manager of CAF, the dual success story of those returning from the UK and those who traveled further afield on the same day, underscores the sustained impact of the GNFC-CAF partnership.
“Both organizations have a firm commitment to athlete development, educational excellence, and international exposure,” she said. “The program continues to break barriers and forge tangible pathways for both female and male athletes, solidifying Antigua and Barbuda’s place on the global football stage.”
The players were seen off by proud family members, who expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity their sons have been given to travel abroad for trials and advanced training. With hopes high, parents shared their dreams of seeing the young athletes succeed and possibly secure professional contracts. The players themselves are focused on gaining advanced knowledge of the sport, honing their skills, and making the most of this chance to break into the professional football arena.
