Cabinet to Address Rising Barbuda Ferry and Flight Costs Next Week

The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has acknowledged concerns over rising ferry costs and reduced flight options between Antigua and Barbuda but has deferred discussion on the matter until its next sitting.

The issue was raised during the weekly Cabinet briefing amid complaints from residents about limited air service, higher ferry fares and challenges with inter-island transportation.

Director General of Communications in the Prime Minister’s Office Maurice Merchant said the matter was not discussed at the most recent Cabinet meeting but remains on the government’s agenda.

“There were no discussions, but the Cabinet is aware and it’s a matter that will be addressed at its next sitting next week,” Merchant said.

Residents have raised concerns about reduced flight availability to Barbuda, increased ferry prices and reliability issues affecting travel between the sister islands. Questions were also raised about the temporary absence of some air services and the impact on mobility for residents, workers and businesses.

Merchant did not provide details on potential solutions but confirmed that Cabinet is aware of the concerns and plans to formally address them.

Further updates are expected following Cabinet’s next meeting.
