The government is preparing to roll out a construction-materials assistance programme for vulnerable households, with Cabinet reviewing plans to make more than $1 million in building supplies available next year.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant announced the update Friday during the post-Cabinet media briefing.

Merchant said the initiative will provide materials including galvanize, plywood, blocks, and lumber to residents who are unable to afford basic home-repair needs.

The programme is intended to support low-income and indigent households and improve living conditions in communities that require structural upgrades.

According to the briefing, the government’s block plant is expected to come online as part of the supply chain for the initiative.

Merchant noted that Minister Rawdon Turner has been assigned responsibility for administering the programme and will outline the full application and distribution process during the upcoming budget debate.

Cabinet expects the materials initiative to improve housing stability, address long-standing maintenance challenges and contribute to the overall enhancement of neighbourhoods across Antigua and Barbuda.

The measure forms part of the administration’s broader social-development agenda heading into 2026.

  1. DEEEEEFLECTION #24

    Lies, half-truths and blatant misinformation.

Anyone who is in the construction industry, and trying to build as an individual or as a larger group know that building supplies, materials and especially concrete has been an issue since 2021

However, the ABLP will continually gloss over these real-time shortages in the industry.

    They are abysmally inept.

Another thing of note about Gaston Browne’s budget, is everything he has mentioned for the country is going to be superb, splendid and sensational. Nothing according to he can go wrong.

    What piffle, poppycock and phooey.

Browne has the RHETORIC of a POET, but the ACTIONS of a slow-moving sloth.

Again, it looks like this construction talk is another of his many misnomers to make Antiguans forget about the vehicle acquisitions procurement scandal that requires an independent investigation.

    Remember, Gaston’s wordplay isn’t better Brixtonian’s 😉
