Cabinet Proposes Fines for Public Cannabis Smoking to Deter Violations

25
Man smoking a marijuana weed joint, inhaling cannabis smoke.

The Cabinet plans to amend the law on public cannabis smoking penalties.

Currently, the first offense results in a warning, the second in a ticket, and the third in a fine.

The new proposal, to be discussed when Parliament reconvenes, will introduce a fine for any public cannabis use.

The aim is to deter this behavior, which is seen as disrespectful to the law and public well-being.

  1. And what about cigarette smoking if they can smoke that then why cant they smoke the weed ? The cigarette smell worst

  2. So what about cigarettes smoking in public places cause isn’t weed alone smoke in public cigarettes more dangerous

  3. Good idea..I have nothing against weed being used in a responsible manner. But having a guy standing in line at Epicurean JH behind me with a half smoked joint hanging out of his mouth smelling like a skunk was just to much.

  4. finally. tired walk thru town and smellling weed. not a look thing for locals or visitors when in the capital.

  5. This scumbags create the problem and too late, coming with this bulls… softly solution.

Too much nepharious people and servants of the illuminates in the government.

  6. What about cigarette/cigar smoking? It is disrespectful when persons just smoke in public areas and the second hand smoke just being puffed in your face.

  7. The entire Cannabis Act is in need of a make over.

While cannabis can be [observed], smelt while being burnt, what of other drugs, such as alcohol, cocaine, heroine, opioids, estasy, mushrooms, shrooms, edibles?
    What of cigars, cigarettes, CRACK?
You can wrap CRACK, HEROINE, METH in tobacco/cigar like a #Robin_🐈🥗_Hood, smoke it in public and none, to include law enforcement.

You’re dealing with #ADDICTS experts in getting their kicks, through whatever mix.

While, the CABINET is setting policy to charge FINES for Public Smoking of CANNABIS, why not CHARGE FINES FOR LOUD NOISES, ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION, PUBLIC PROSTITUTION at these STRIP CLUBS, BEAUTY PARLORS, RUM SHOPS, ILLEGAL GAMBLING, DRY_FUCKING IN PUBLIC TOO?

These fines will go a long way in easing the VIOLENCE as well, put dollars in the PUBLIC TREASURY for white collar criminals and politicians to use, misuse, steal and ENRICH themselves, as they see fit.

THE ENTIRE CANNABIS ACT MUST BE AMMENDED TO MAKE IT BENEFIT ALL AND NOT JUST POLITICIANS AND THEIR CHOSEN FEW!

This is just a #smoke screen, to use the [smoke] from a legal plant, as the SCAPEGOAT for the VIOLENCE in the COUNTRY.

  8. The biggest problems in Antigua now are the increases in CRIMES & VIOLENCE. Law enforcement should be focused on what is life threatening, not petty shit that only puts more money in the government coffers.
Disrespect never kill non bady. Btw, I’m not advocating for weed smoking here; I just think at this juncture, there are far more important issues that requires law enforcement’s attention.

  9. The Prime Minister Gaston Browne well an’ know that he opened up the door for the widespread use of Cannabis amongst the young (and the not so young); and now that this drug has – in the most part – contributed to the current rises in crime, this negligent government now wants to introduce fines???

HAVEN’T THE ABLP REALISED THAT THIS “DRUG HORSE/MULE” HAS ALREADY BOLTED?

Again, another case of the ABLP being reactive instead of being proactive …

  10. So you decriminalize cannabis (marijuana) without doing proper research on it’s impact. You cannot use data from other countries to make decisions for your country.

Teachers have been talking out about how students smoke a lot in the schools since this decriminalization started, yet nothing was done. Now that these young people have become seasoned smokers and some criminals, you want to do something about it. Oooohhhh how we work backwards!

    Nonetheless, hoping things work out.

  11. Only persons with a medical permit should be able to buy, smoke and sell cannabis. I also agree that they should not be permitted to smoke in public. It’s a shame to see the youths in town with scissors, cutting and wrapping weed. They are high as a kite driving with a big joint in their mouth, lips black like tar and skin looking dry as a dessert. It is clear that not much thought went into legalizing this drug. Our young men are mixing drugs and turning into vagrants left right and center. They are also acting irrationally and slow. The weed abuse is clearly killing stunting their brain development.

  12. The chickens have come home to roost!
Four trees and how many grams?

What exactly did you think was going to happen when young people start smoking?
    Eh!
    What?
They were going to become law abiding citizens?
    Such naivety??
    This government makes me sick?
    Give them weed,
You get votes in return.. hmm

  13. Bull Crap … Wa HAPPEN TO SMOKING Proven Cancer causing Cigarette and Drinking Rum that has caused soo much Death on the Roads. Marijauna properties all have proven Health Benifits and Scientific Use …!!!

LLB [ Lunny Lanny Bozoo ] Gaston and ALP is looking for scapegoats ….!!! Tell He …” THE SKELETONS THEM IN HIS & ALP CLOSSET …!!!

  14. The same actions has to be taken against the cigarette and cigar smokers…..When the Police see a tourist standing by Redcliffe Quey smoking his Marlboro cigarette he/she should get the same treatment….

  15. The #CANNABIS_ΗΕMP INDUSTRY needs to be opened for INVESTMENT by ALL CITIZENS. If the DENIZENS, CIPERS, FOREIGN CONGLOMERATES CAN GET LICENSES, WE MUST TOO!

#FARMER_👨🏿‍🌾_BROWNE aka PM GASTON BROWNE, allegedly, sold his farm, after the said CABINET granted certain concessions for the FARMERS and AGRICULTURE, which MEDICAL CANNABIS is regulated under!

REGIS “Mr. Uncertain” BURTON, do your job to benefit ALL WHO ARE INTERESTED IN INVESTING IN THE CANNABIS/HEMP INDUSTRY.

To those who oppose this industry fine. This is your right and prerogative; but, leave my rights be too, because…

    EVERYTHING IS FOR EVERYBODY
    yet…
EVERY BODY IS NOT FOR EVERY THING!

  16. What about men and men women and women openly showing affection, this entire world is upside down .. what about the law going for everyone even your friends and people in high places… maybe if you decrease some of the high taxes people could find a head way in life .. young people and there parents are hungry and nothing will stop Crime until that is resolved, when you put certain laws in place then other things become the problem… why did you guys allow these weed dispensaries to open up , bc of pure greed I guess .. what are you going to do if you start to lock up the youngsters where are you going to put them ? What is the plan after lock up ? All I see is people who talk and don’t think it all the way through.. why install glass bus stops and no maintenance in plan? Now let’s have a count down and see how long this will last …

  17. I really don’t understand why someone wants to be seen smoking in public. Does that makes you feel macho, tough, or what. It must be one of them. Cause if it were me, I’d rather do it in the comfort of my home. On my balcony in my hammock.
What the government should consider is giving licenses just like liquor license to establishments where this drug can be smoked. I guess those guys love to be in company of other smokers. In Holland those establishments are called Coffee Shop. They are all over in Amsterdam.

I mean I don’t know why we are making such a big thing out of people smoking cannabis. Is as old as who knows. Hundreds of years. But yes if one cannot handle being high, don’t try it. Just like drinking. Some people cannot handle alcohol. They should not drink it. That is why the youth when exposed to these things for the first time need to be under adult supervision. De-criminalize it is just the first step. This drug needs to be legalized. It’s no worse that alcohol. In fact it is better, because one can use its medicinal purposes. CBD Oil

Cannabidiol oil, or CBD oil derived from cannabis, is a popular natural remedy for many ailments. CBD oil benefits include pain relief and relaxation without any mind-altering effects.

  20. The decriminalization of marijuana was done without any proper guidelines. Now users are lighting up and smoking everywhere even with little or no regard to nonsmokers. Government was in a haste in order to appease one sector of the society and are now forced to try and issue new guidelines. It’s like selling a tool without the instruction manual.

  21. THE MORAL OF THIS LEVEL OF STUPIDITY IS SMOKING GANJA IN THE PRIVACY OF YOUR HOME HAS NO EFFECT ON THE BRAIN, SMOKING THE GANJA IN PUBLIC IS WHAT AFFECTS THE BRAIN. I GET IT NOW.

THIS PENDING LAW IS TO SAVE FACE AND HIDE THE EVIDENCE THAT IS CONTRIBUTING THE DEMISE OF THE YOUTH.

  22. Commend the government for bringing legislation against smoking in public, which should have gone to tobacco smoking too, both marijuana and tobacco is causing the same cancer related death, because it’s associated with a religious sect, they won’t tell you bob Marley or king frank-I died from smoke related death, so I am against any smoke in public.

  23. Eldred shut up m tobacco yes but you ain’t got no proof that Marijuana causes cancer..
In actually Marijuana has properties to heal cancer so just stop it
