The United Taxi Association operates from the V.C. Bird International Airport and notes the influx of drivers who pick-up and discharge passengers driving cars with “A” and “C” plates.
The visitors to Cabinet sought the intervention of the Cabinet to eliminate this practice, which hurts the airport taxi drivers’ income and dilutes the security which a registered taxi-driver provides.
The Cabinet gave a promise to work with the authorities at the Airport to provide stricter controls.
Many solo travelers, the Cabinet was informed, are female; ensuring their greater security on their way to and from the V.C. Bird International Airport is critical to the success of tourism, the United Taxi Association informed.

Wait? Why i should be forced to take a Taxi if my family or friends have vehicles? That’s is ridiculous. Even I have a car, and any person can drop me at the Airport in my Car and drive it back to my house. Those Taxi association want to be like a Gang and attack the constitutional rights of every citizen to choose how and what to do with his private assets? Why you wanna force tourist to take specific type of vehicles? If anybody want to rent any private service why you wanna act like a Mafia and dictate ONLY TAXI…I don’t trust any Taxi drivers in the island, most of them drive reckless with over speeding. I saw them in a daily basic and there is no way i will use them. I dont care but nobody can obligate me to use Taxi Services. If you force that..then court for violation of Constitutional rights of citizens
As a former member, now retired, of United Taxi Association, I can say this is a decades long practice.
Tour agents have for years utilized A and C plated vehicles to transfer their ‘Private Taxi Transfers’.
C plated vehicles are, according to ABTB for use in Commercial Business other than Taxi Services. It is my opinion that even though there is a caveat, there still exists loopholes that people slip through.
A plated vehicles are meant solely for private and personal use.
If, however, Tour Agents are allowed to either own, lease or rent A plated vehicles for the purpose of transporting their ‘high-end’ clients then others will follow suit.
How does that get curtailed? A detailed plan outlining the issuance of vehicular plates and their usage has to be updated. A different type of plate with different identifying plate numbers must be put in place to ferry these ‘high-end’ clients.
On the inside of the vehicle in a conspicuous place there should be a sign or sticker giving the name of the driver, company or identity for whom the vehicle is working under and any other information deemed pertinent to safeguarding the passengers.
The laws governing public transportation need to be revised to include any changes to the current vehicle registration system and attendant disciplinary charges and fees or acts added to the regulations.
The traffic wardens and police officers need to be vested with the authority to scrutinize all documents to include insurance, vehicle registration, ownership and purpose of use. They should be empowered with powers of seizure and arrest.
Persons entering the airport to pick up fare paying passengers should alert the taxi dispatcher before the client arrives showing legal right in the form of a letter of request from said client to include name of client and number of passengers travelling in said party.
I think looking at the above mentioned suggestions could go a little way into curbing an age old problem
Try dropping their rates. I will continue to pull my own bags to the parking lot. Back to the drawing board.
@ Arnaldo, nobody is forcing a private citizen from using their personal vehicle to pick up their family or friends. That has always been and will always be permissable.
The issue is the use of P plated and C plated vehicles as taxis for hire.
