Source Real News: Cabinet grants duty-free concessions to named business to operate a funeral home and crematorium

After months of on-again-off-again reports about a crematorium for Antigua and Barbuda, it appears that the Browne Administration has made a decision in favour of an entity called Meyer’s Funeral Home Ltd.

A Cabinet decision – dated Wednesday, March 20; stamped on April 3; and validated by the Customs and Excise Division on April 5 – grants duty-free concessions and a lease of property to operate a funeral home and crematorium to this company.

The initial approval, which was granted on March 13, is for waivers of import duty and the Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST) on the importation of items related to the operation of the said business – “subject to site identification and report to Cabinet.”

Sources tell REAL News they find it strange that – up to four weeks after approval – no mention of this Cabinet decision has been made in either the weekly notes or the post-Cabinet press briefings, given the public interest in the matter.

Initial inquiries could not confirm the ownership of Meyer’s Funeral Home Ltd.; nor its address; nor whether the Government has any stake in the business.

  1. Is it the hot lady from Canada (Antiguan and Canadian) I met who wanted to start such endeavor getting this? Congratulations to her.

She must be truly important for the PM to not say I cannot help you like they all have said to me at the political party, ABLP, I use to be so supportive of

I am happy for those ladies. THEY HAVE THE CONNECTION.

    • You claim to be a lawyer. Lawyers are no longer publicly misogynistic as you are in your comments.
Your statement about these Antigua/Canadian businesswomen speaks of a deeply misogynistic attitude.
Get a life and Get a wife hoping she is able to rehab you.

      • It is not even those lovely ladies who got the duty free. Wow. I was so happy for them. I am now reading it is not these lovely ladies?

  2. Within the past few months, the Antiguan/Canadian females presented a business plan to Cabinet for a crematorium business. They received headline coverage both on their arrival and on their departure, when they were sent packing. Let me correct that. They walked away, claiming they were confronted with a number of hurdles, and their confidential business plan was disclosed to non-governmental parties while they were awaiting approval.

It was widely speculated that the crematorium business was going to end up in the hands of individuals fronting for Gaston Browne’s Ministers. This business was being reserved for the ALBP connected.
Now soon have these businesswomen made public the disclosure of their business plan as well as other partnership arrangements being presented to them, the public is being informed of a new entity obtaining both tax concessions and land from which to operate this new business.
We no longer hear of the Government plans for a crematorium. The Gaston Brown and his Cabinet Members knows no shame.
This new private venture with all the goodies from Government was secretly carried out with no public disclosure. And only limited disclosure deliberately delayed after the deed is done.

As usual Gaston and his mouth pieces will consider any criticism as distractors up to no good. The system is rigged, and they will get away with this.

Next time you vote, you are fooling yourself, for we do not live in a Democracy.

It’s like putting hand full of sugar in your mouth every morning hoping the sugar fuels you for the day. Sweet taste on the palette at the moment it hits your tongue, while it destroys your body.
We are not alone, many countries who claim to be Democracies are led by despots and kleptomaniacs like we have here in Antigua and Barbuda.
