CABINET NOTES: The Cabinet held a discussion with two officials from the St. John’s Development Corporation (SJDC) who have oversight responsibility for vendors within the City of St. John’s.

It was agreed that vending along the roadsides near the Public Market gives the City an untidy look and cause traffic to slow to a crawl since pedestrians are forced to walk in the roads.

The Minister with responsibility for the SJDC, acting on the instructions from Cabinet, caused the statutory body to publish a Notice indicating that the vendors are to vacate the sidewalks, except on Saturdays when many farmers sell their produce to housewives and others.

Following lengthy discussions, it was agreed that the vendors are allowed to extend their presence by one day –Thursday 17 April 2025— but that they move indoors and to other designated places, away from the sidewalks, before the business day commences on Tuesday 22 April 2025.

Friday and Monday are religious holidays in Antigua and Barbuda.

  1. Thanks to an ever-caring who did not give onto the dogs of war demanding the bones of the street side vendors.
The streets must be cleared and cleaned. The vendors too, NUST individually or collectively devise a plan of their own for the sale of the products THEY CHOOSE to sell. Taxpayers through the government of the day are NOT obligated to provide shelter or housing to persons who unilaterally and arbitrarily decide to set up shop some where in St. John’s
Tired hearing that Government should procure and ready spaces, offices and storage facilities for this growing number of “entrepreneurs is totally ridiculous, to say the least.

  2. I don’t understand. Vendors are business people. We also portray vendors as poor people. Many of them are quite wealthy. But that aside why are they given a bly? We seem to have different rules for different people. For instance why are taxi drivers exempt from the road tax? Why do they get duty free tyres? Aren’t they in business like everyone else? What concessions do other local businesses get? Let’s make it a free for all for all.

  3. Greetings, clean up market street to move vendors to both side of all street that runs east and west in the city, problem solved market street will be cleaner, and pedestrian can on the side walks.

  4. Next, the government should introduce a safe erection building code for vendors to follow, so when they leave the city Wouldn’t look so trashed .
