Prime Minister Gaston Browne says Cabinet is discussing a proposal to rename Potters Main Road in honour of the iconic Antiguan band Burning Flames.
Posting on social media, Mr Browne revealed the suggested name is “Burning Flames Drive”. The announcement comes as the band marks its 40th anniversary.
Band member Clarence “Oungku” Edwards welcomed the move, recalling that a similar promise was made more than 30 years ago. “If your Cabinet can get this done, this would be another feather in your already well-decorated hat,” he wrote.
Formed in 1984, Burning Flames has become one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most celebrated musical exports. The group – brothers Clarence, Toriano “Onyan” and David “Bubb-I” Edwards, along with nephew Rone “Foxx” Watkins – has toured widely, promoting Caribbean culture worldwide.

Not to take anything from what Burning Flames have contributed to society over 40 years. But I think its totally unnecessary to make that move. Why rename known landmarks and areas from the names people have known and grown accustomed to over the years since childhood? It literally just complicate things even more cause now all signage have to change because of this. Ironically, the government only does this kinda thing to known figures who are diehard supporters of them

And wouldn’t it also be nice if the Princess Margaret School was also considered to be renamed to a past historical and prominent Antiguan.
Never forget that the UK’s Princess Margaret was a drunkard, and her morals were very questionable indeed. Fact!
How about renaming the school to Prince Klass (1694-1736) who was the enslaved Antiguan who lost his life fighting against the elitist ruling plantocracy at that time in history.

Not a backer of burning flames, but by any means necessary to get rid of these institutional colonial names off our psyche I agree with any government in power. The more we call these colonial white former slave master name it becomes institutionalized, no wonder the children don’t do well in school when it is called off of slave owners, and the villages so dysfunctional because we calling evil massa name daily from 400 years ago.

That road is a disaster area and has been terrible since the 1960’s! Repave it properly before you rename it!
Burning Flames sang songs glorifying breaking into women’s homes and assaulting them. This happened when people were living in fear of serial rapists. They also sang encouraging men to have sex with children. We should not rename a road after perverts.
How come no protest was done when they changed Boggy Peek to Obama Peek.Boggy Peek is our own history. WhatObama did for Antigua,not even in America they honor him.You all are set of hypocrites.
