What if all it took was a cup of tea and the courage to share a story? Thanks to a Creative Grant from the Commonwealth Foundation, Brenda Lee Browne proudly presents “In Celebration of Our Voices,” a multi-part storytelling initiative that began with a series of writing and storytelling workshops and culminates in a special live event titled ‘Bush Tea & Storytelling’.

The event will take place on Saturday, April 5th, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Julees, located at the junction of Cross and Tanner Streets in St. John’s.

Brenda Lee Browne, the event’s producer, explained the idea behind the project: “Anyone can write a story or a book; there is no magic formula.

All you need is an idea or memory that triggers a story told in your unique voice, vision. At the core of every published piece of creative writing is a story the writer wants to tell and share”

The project champions the idea that every voice matters and that storytelling is one of the most powerful tools for preserving culture, expressing identity, and connecting across generations.

Browne adds that: “We’re not looking for perfection, it is open to anyone who wants to share a story, published, unpublished, school child or elder, what we are we are looking for is authenticity.

At the heart of this initiative is a commitment to preserving the voices and stories of Antigua & Barbuda and reminding our community that our stories have value. Each story adds to a collective archive that says, “We were here, and this is how we see the world”. I wish to thank HAMA Films, Joe Martin and Julees as well as the Commonwealth Foundation for partnering with me.”

Persons are invited to step forward, sip a complimentary cup of bush tea, and record a 2–5-minute story directly to camera.

These stories — whether a personal memory, a joke, a family tale, historical story, sad, funny, poignant or an original poem or extract from an original piece of writing fiction or non-fiction. The stories will be featured in a virtual Storytelling Festival to be produced by HAMA Productions, to be published on YouTube and shared with audiences across the Caribbean and beyond.

Whether you’re a writer, a dreamer, a quiet observer, or someone with a funny memory to share, this event is for you. Bring a photo, a prop, or a friend. Bring your voice.
