DAILY OBSERVER: A bus driver in his early 50s is currently on trial in the High Court on charges of rape and serious indecency.
The trial, which began on Monday, continued yesterday with law enforcement officials giving testimony before a nine-person jury.
The case centres on allegations from February 2023 involving a 21-year-old woman who, due to a developmental disability, has the cognitive functioning level of a teenager.
Prosecutors allege that after initially connecting with the victim through social media and engaging in a consensual relationship, the defendant transported her to an abandoned building on February 15, 2023, where he allegedly had sexual intercourse with her and forced her to perform oral sex on him against her will.
The trial will continue today with the jury of five men and four women scheduled to visit the location where the alleged assault took place.
Defence attorney Lawrence Daniels is representing the accused, who has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Justice Ann Marie Smith is presiding over the proceedings.

Justice must take its course—hoping for a fair trial for all involved.
If guilty, he should face the full force of the law. No excuses.
Innocent until proven guilty, but these allegations are very serious.
Too many of these cases coming up! Something has to change in society.
This is why proper vetting of public transport drivers is so important!
Hoping the justice system handles this case properly—no shortcuts.
Whatever the verdict, let’s support the victims of sexual violence in our community.
These predators are everywhere.. Smhhh
So we cant even trust bus drivers now?
Wow ! God come for your world please 🙏
If he is truly guilty lock him up and throw away the key!
Is the “abandoned building” the UPP CAN’T PARK AT EAST BUS STATION??? 🤔
What does UPP’s IAN MAGIC HUGHES have to say about this type of thing?
The man whom we hail as an icon, was notorious for pedophilia. He groomed quite a few victims in his time and many seem to be psychologically swayed to the extent that they are still chasing his legacy. One Judas expressed that his bones should be exhumed and taken to trial and if found guilty, jailed for life. He needs to be remembered for introducing and employing the ‘Bruck Foot Industry ‘.
The one that drive the purple bus watch out for he to he thirsty bad….
“The court was told that the violation had impacted the young victim so severely, she wanted to end her life and had engaged in self mutilation. In this case, Ian Hughes, who was 50 years old at the time, touched the child’s breasts and tried to force her to kiss him more than once, while they were in his vehicle.”
the Court heard that Hughes, who is now 56, offered the child a ride home and he violated her while driving from Gunthorpes to St. John’s.
No judgment here! But if this is true, he has to know that Her ability to understand as a mature woman is not developed , so he took advantage of that.
I hope justice will be served .
