By Clare Browne, Director of Education
Helen Caldicott cited, “Teachers, I believe, are the most responsible and important members of society because their professional efforts affect the fate of the earth.”
Rowe, 2003 in speaking of teachers, argues that although children’s literacy command, overall scholastic accomplishments, behavioural tendencies and school experiences are impacted by their upbringing and intake qualities, the extent of these influences are inconsequential when paralleled with the impact of the class-teacher.
Darling-Hammond expresses it quite cogently: “Well prepared capable teachers have the largest impact on student learning and they need to be treasured …” (Darling-Hammond, 2003, p.7).
On the occasion of World Teachers Day 2020, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology salutes all teachers in Antigua and Barbuda.
It is imperative that we give thanks to all our industrious educators for it is because of your hard labour that our society is what it is today. I take this opportunity to thank all of you immensely for the part you continue to play to ensure that our students get a quality education even in a COVID-19 environment. This is indubitably nothing short of sacrificial service. Thank you for recognizing that you are the guiding force behind the Nation’s children as you continue to make the journey to success a cakewalk. Your counsel and patience are the rays which unfold the virtues and talents latent in the hearts and minds of tomorrow’s leaders. Our children are the future and education is a primary ingredient for life and living. I urge you to continue to help our young people to realize their dreams; continue to build a nation, to mould a country.
To our retired teachers, lecturers, department heads, deputy principals and principals: for your lifelong dedication to education, for believing in young people, for guiding through example, for inspiring with passion, for living through loving, for leaving an indelible mark on the future, for touching the human soul – accept a deluge of gratitude from the Ministry of Education.
Today we remember those teachers who have departed this life, giving thanks to God for their lives and the priceless contribution they have made. We pray that light perpetual may shine on them.
Happy World Teachers Day!

I had some of the best teachers in the world. They were Malcolm De Freitas,Teacher Bailey,Miss Salmon and Linroy Francis. Thanks to them for laying that foundation of education for me at Greenbay Primary School. To this day,I have used their principles in teachings in my decisions making.
I can only hope your god will help the said teachers financially. We all know they are underpaid. “Thanks” doesn’t pay bills.
Teachers are on the “front lines,” in this pan, plan, epi – DEMIC, and I barely, ever hear this mention, in public. It must be very daunting with the doors, to the Virtual World’s swung wide open!
All the best, to the Teachers; and, please pay them like doctors, and attorneys! Hey…….!
