Browne Calls for ABLP Unity to Protect Nation from ‘Destructive’ Opposition
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has issued a rallying call for unity within the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), warning that internal strength is essential to safeguard the country from what he described as a reckless and destructive opposition.
Addressing a large crowd at a political rally on Friday night, the ABLP leader urged party members and supporters to remain united in the face of mounting political attacks, misinformation, and what he alleged were attempts to destabilise the country by elements within the United Progressive Party (UPP).
“This is a time for us to strengthen our union and ensure that we remain solidly united,” Mr Browne declared. “The unity of Labour is the salvation of our country.”
Mr Browne accused opposition figures of collaborating with foreign actors to damage the country’s international reputation—particularly in relation to recent allegations involving the Alfa Nero yacht.
He also referenced what he termed “sedition” and “acts of sabotage” dating back years, warning that some in the opposition were willing to see the nation suffer for political gain.
“They want to plunge this country into crisis and chaos,” he said. “But as long as Labour is united, they will not succeed.”
The Prime Minister presented the ABLP as a stabilising force and credited the party with overseeing substantial progress in economic development, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and housing.
He told supporters that any return to power by the UPP would jeopardise hard-won national gains.
“If we ever make the mistake of allowing them to fluke a win—as they nearly did in 2023—they will destroy this country,” he said.
With Labour Day celebrations approaching, Mr Browne encouraged supporters to march in large numbers as a demonstration of strength and solidarity.
“Let us put 10,000 people on the road,” he said. “Let us show them that the Labour Party is the party of choice in this country.”
In a speech that blended political defiance with personal conviction, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his loyalty to the people and the party.
“I’m not in politics for money, fame, or personal gain,” he said. “I am here to serve you. And as long as I have breath, I will continue to fight for the people of Antigua and Barbuda.”
