(PRESS RELEASE)

Growing up Black, British, and a descendant of West Indian migrants to London is the foundation of “London Rocks”, a novella by author Brenda Lee Browne.

In the official launch this past Saturday 14th, Browne introduced the book’s main protagonist Dante while recounting personal experiences and socio-political elements of the era that gave birth to his character.

Dante Brookes is a young man growing up in London in the late 70’s and early 80’s when sound systems ruled the party scene for young, Black British youths of Caribbean heritage. He navigates the loss of friends, police harassment and being a teenage father while forging a career as an MC. Dante stumbles into the acting profession and also becomes a writer. It is through these disparate experiences that he learns that the pen and mic are mightier than the sword.

Arif Ali,  of Hansib – the books publisher – offered these thoughts.  “We at Hansib are proud to be involved in the publishing of Brenda Lee Browne’s book London Rocks. Her vast experience will ensure that further books will follow.  Brenda Lee Browne is another feather in Antigua and Barbuda’s cap.”

For her part, Browne says, “London Rocks is the book I had to writeI needed to write about a time in my life when music meant a lot. This book is a slice of the Black British experience, coming of age and defining our world through clothes, music and language. I have to thank Hansib for publishing ‘London Rocks’, it’s been a long journey and well worth the wait.”

Speaking of the launch event, Browne says, “I have to thank Mike Hunt and Imogen Margrie Hunt of Cedars Pottery for the beautiful setting, Jackie Holborough for the music, Mark Brown for curating pieces, Reef Treats for the canapes and Alan Marsh for being a great host. This launch was a success thanks to their support and the support of friends and family.”

Browne says she looks forward to sharing ‘London Rocks’ with many more readers.”

‘London Rocks’ is available at the Best of Books, The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, from the author herself via email[email protected], online at hansibpublications.com, and beginning this summer from Amazon UK.
