Breaking: Fifth Earthquake Recorded Near Antigua and Barbuda
A fifth earthquake has been recorded near Antigua and Barbuda, continuing the series of seismic events in the region.
The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI, SRC) reported that the latest tremor occurred on November 16, 2024, at 5:48 AM local time (09:48 UTC). This earthquake registered a magnitude of 4.4 at a depth of 14 kilometers.
The epicenter was located at latitude 17.66N and longitude 61.60W, approximately 67 kilometers northeast of Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, 117 kilometers northeast of Brades, Montserrat, and 132 kilometers east-northeast of Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis.
This marks the strongest earthquake since the initial 5.0-magnitude tremor on November 15, in a sequence of five quakes within the last 24 hours.
All events have been shallow, which increases the likelihood of tremors being felt at the surface. Reports from residents indicate that the shaking was noticeable, though no significant damage has been reported so far.
UWI, SRC emphasized that the information is preliminary and may be updated after further analysis. Residents are urged to report their experiences to assist in assessing the impact of these earthquakes. Authorities continue to remind the public to remain vigilant and prepared as seismic activity persists in the region.

To this day I have not heard anyone giving a good explanation as to why there has been increasing seismic activities throughout the entire Caribbean basin recently. It’s not just Antigua and Barbuda but all the islands have had several earthquakes this year alone.
