BPM council members say they are ready to work

Five members of the Barbuda Council yesterday took back its administration building from NODS. A meeting was held between the members to discuss the way forward.

The chair of the Barbuda Council received two letters requesting meetings and a further to remind her that if a meeting is not called without delay there could be legal consequences. To date, the Chair has not responded.

The Barbuda Council under the Barbuda Local Government Act has administrative responsibility for Barbuda in certain key areas health and disaster services being two of them.

The BPM members of the Council believe it is important that the Council establishes itself formally on island to fulfill its duties and responsibilities to the Barbuda constituents, many of whom have returned to Barbuda.

Internet and generators are available on the island and there are means to allow the administration to operate effectively.

According to the Barbuda Local Government Act Council has to be reconstituted in January of every year, unless there is a Council election. No efforts have been made to date to fulfill this legal requirement.

The BPM councilors are reminding the other councilors that the seat of power is here in Barbuda and that they were voted into office here.

The members of Council have no issue with NODS continuing to operate in Barbuda but it must be with due respect for the Barbuda Local Government Act.
