Booby Alley Project Progressing Rapidly Despite Early Opposition, PM Says
Prime Minister Gaston Browne says construction on the Booby Alley housing redevelopment is advancing steadily, with workers operating around the clock to complete the long-delayed project.
Speaking on Pointe FM’s Browne and Browne Show on Saturday, Mr Browne stated that more than 150 homes are expected to be completed by this time next year. He described the project’s pace as “relentless,” noting that different crews have been working in shifts to ensure progress continues day and night.
“This is one of the most active construction sites on the island,” the Prime Minister said. “They are working 24/7, and it shows. You can see the boom cranes in the air and men walking along them – it’s serious work being done.”
The Booby Alley project, located in the Point area of St John’s, had previously drawn criticism from opposition figures who claimed it was a “land grab” and accused the government of displacing residents for political and commercial purposes.
Mr Browne rejected those accusations, saying the homes are being built for the people of the community and will provide long-term housing security.
“The opposition said nothing would be built. They told the people it was a sham. Now they must be ashamed, because we are delivering,” he said.
The project is being funded with support from the People’s Republic of China and forms part of the government’s broader housing programme. Mr Browne said critics who once claimed the development would never happen should now acknowledge the reality on the ground.
It remains unclear when official allocations for the completed units will begin.
