Former United States President Bill Clinton is to visit Dominica and Antigua and Barbuda next week.
Clinton said Friday that the invitation to visit the hurricane-battered island as well as Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Antigua and Barbuda had been issued by the leaders of those countries.
The countries were battered by Hurricanes Irma and Maria when the Category 5 storms passed through the Lesser Antilles last September.
Clinton was among leaders who attended and addressed an international donor conference held in New York last November to mobilise resources for the countries.
He said the Clinton Foundation will be launching an Action Network on Post-Disaster Recovery, following a meeting Thursday with officials from the islands, as well as leaders from business and civil society.
The Action Network will formally convene for a meeting on April 3rd at the University of Miami, where stakeholders will continue to work towards Commitments to Action to address the on-going immediate response needs, as well as the long-term recovery in the region.
The network builds from the successful Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) model, where leaders from across sectors convene to mobilise resources and implement solutions to addressing pressing global challenges.
Clinton will travel next week to the U.S. Virgin Islands and Dominica, to view the islands’ ongoing efforts to continue building back in the wake of last year’s hurricane season. This follows a trip to Puerto Rico in November of last year.
“Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Caribbean community are in need, and we must answer that call,” said Clinton.
“Together with leaders from government, business, and civil society, we can demonstrate what is possible when we come together and bring our collective will and resources to bear on this crisis. We have a responsibility to act, for the people who are still suffering, and for all the future generations in the region,” he added.
