He met with union officials today to discuss forming an advisory board for the initiative, saying it’s time workers receive better representation.
The Prime Minister criticizes the Antigua & Barbuda Workers Union (ABWU) for allegedly collecting over $2M annually from hotel workers but not meeting their needs.
The Prime Minister has even floated the idea of the government providing a soft loan to help the workers cover start-up costs, provided the union remains independent of political influence.

The PM is right. Let the hotel workers have their own union. Millions union making off workers and not representing them at all. These union are greedy and wicked. Heartless set of people.

any union that is not started by the workers themselves, on their own initiative, is a fake union. Why would someone like Gaston brown, or the upp for that matter, who has done everything he could to resist an increase in the minimum wage over many years, want to start an effective union to fight for better wages. makes zero sense. Obviously just another cynical ploy to gain himself more power.
I personally think it is a brilliant idea that the hotel workers have their own bargaining agents. If you look at the strength and power of the teachers because they have their own unions. If the hotel workers had their own Union the Royalton Hotels would not be laying off locals citizens and replacing them by bringing in workers from, Mexico , Spain , Dominican Republic, Jamaican and St.Lucia. Can you imagine these people bringing cleaners, paying for their tickets, accommodation, local transportation and want to pay maids , laundry workers, maintenance workers basic salaries. The maids at Royalton had to strike for a little drinking water and basic supplies and working environment.
In the meantime Chester Hughes sits in the restaurants and have breakfast, Lunch and Dinner- collects money on the behalf of sponsoring his football team. Always breaking strike saying he has solved the problem and in the end the same old. Can you imagine right now at the Royalton they brought in a Spanish landscape company and replaced the workers with All Spanish. At both hotels there were all black picky head Antiguans doing the gardening. Now it’s all Spanish and the work is inferior at that. Same thing with the pool maintenance and the cleaning. All Spanish foreigners. Little construction repairs and they bring in Mexicans. The PM and the Labour minister need to look into this as well.
We cannot give away our taxes/ by way of duty free concessions and tax exemptions. We provide them with the best infrastructure services. They cut off a portion of our beach down halcyon and we all sit back and allow these expatriates rip off, raid and rape our country and our people. Just for personal enrichment of the Union and politicians.
So if is a good thing for the workers to have their own union.
I also think the motive coming from the PM is political. Be it as it may it will work out to the benefit of the workers . The hotel workers will get far better working conditions under its own union.
Let’s look for example- most of the hotels workers are women. A high percentage of them are single parents. Just like the hotels have kid’s clubs for the children of the tourists. They could have a nice day care for the children of the single parents workers. Instead of concentrating on stealing their service charges from them . Also a proper pension plan, thrift fund, medical insurance, and security bond for those that just get up sell of and leave. The castle harbor hotel workers never got their severance to this day. That individual was allowed to operate casinos. He is now deceased but his son owns and operates.
ALL NON ESTABLISHED WORKERS MUST FORM THEMSELVES INTO THEIR OWN UNION AT THE SAME TIME.
NON ESTABLISH WORKERS NEED TO PUT AN ADVISORY BOARD IN PLACE ASAP.
CALLING ON FREE TRADE UNION AND POTTER UNION TO EXECUTE A NEW UNION FOR NON ESTABLISHED WORKERS IMMIDEATELY.
