The Antigua and Barbuda national football team kicked off their training sessions last Friday at the Technical Center in Painters, as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers this summer. The team’s new head coach, Jacques Passy, is focused on finalizing the roster ahead of the crucial matches.

Jacques Passy, a 49-year-old Mexican native, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s commitment and professionalism despite their recent struggles. “When you come to a team that has not won in 18 months, you might expect the players to have the wrong attitude or lack professionalism. But I’ve found quite the opposite,” Passy said. “The team has had great training sessions, great attitude, and great professionalism. We’ve improved every session, and I’m very happy with the progress.”

The sessions have been a critical opportunity for Jacques Passy to assess the players. “This is my first time meeting the players here in Antigua, so I needed to get a feel for them,” he explained. “Every session has been competitive and intense. While less tactical than I would usually prefer, it’s been invaluable in understanding how each player reacts to high-pressure situations, both defensively and offensively.”

With a focus on assessing key aspects of play, including transitions, set pieces, and defensive strategies, the training has provided Paci with insights into the team’s strengths and areas for improvement.

Looking ahead, the Benner boys will face Cuba on June 6 at home before traveling to Honduras four days later. The results of these qualifiers will be crucial in shaping the team’s path forward.
