Public Safety Minister Announces Legislation to Improve Standards in Healthcare Facilities
Public Safety Minister Steadroy Cutie Benjamin highlighted the urgent need for social legislation to address the deplorable conditions witnessed in healthcare facilities.
Minister Benjamin expressed deep concern over the inadequate care and living conditions experienced by vulnerable individuals, emphasizing the importance of establishing minimum standards to ensure their well-being.
During the parliamentary session, Minister Benjamin shared a disheartening incident he personally encountered while visiting a home care facility.
He described the facility as having pervasive issues, including scattered personal care equipment (PCEs), individuals wearing soiled diapers for extended periods, and unsanitary food conditions attracting flies.
Outraged by these observations, Minister Benjamin pledged to take decisive action to rectify the situation.
Minister Benjamin confirmed that the Ministry of Legal Affairs is set to draft comprehensive legislation.
This legislation aims to establish and enforce minimum standards for the upkeep and care of individuals residing in healthcare facilities across the nation.
Minister Benjamin underscored the importance of preventing financial exploitation of vulnerable individuals within these facilities.
He recounted an alarming incident where an individual, named Miss Williams Naomi, was taken advantage of, with her benefits signed away and her whereabouts unknown after being removed from a finance institute.
Determined to prevent such occurrences, Minister Benjamin announced plans to involve the government in cases where financial exploitation is suspected.
He expressed the intent to enact laws that would safeguard individuals from being taken advantage of and ensure that funds allocated for their care are utilized appropriately.
As part of the initiative, Minister Benjamin introduced Miss Loron, who has been appointed as a Public Trustee.
He emphasized that the government would actively intervene to protect the rights and financial well-being of vulnerable individuals.
The proposed legislation aims to empower authorities to take swift action in cases where individuals are at risk of financial exploitation.
Minister Steadroy Cutie Benjamin reiterated the government’s commitment to crafting legislation that addresses the needs of the poor and those requiring assistance.
By setting and enforcing minimum standards, the government aims to enhance the quality of care provided in healthcare facilities and put an end to the financial exploitation of vulnerable individuals.

Where is the Ministry Of Health in this. Does not these facilities fall under the Ministry’s portfolio.
I was wondering the same thing . Doesn’t the Minister or Ministry of Health have a team that visit these health care facilities on a regular basis? I’ve been hearing about the deplorable conditions for years . Lets see what the Health Minister have to say .
This is happening on Molwyn ‘AstraZeneca’ Joseph’s watch. Doesn’t he have a competent team around him that ensures our MOST vulnerable are safe, secure and in clean surroundings!
Everywhere you look at how things are badly run in the country that I love and adore, it just sickens me to the pit of my ‘tomach.
WHY, WHY, WHY CAN’T WE GET THE BASICS RIGHT?
Benjamin needs to take a drive through his constituency and see how the place looks and smell just like him , like shit on the fi+king wall .
Shamu needs to concentrate on HIS ministry. Crime rages out of control and he tell us Antigua is the safest place in the Caribbean. The old farts have exhausted their usefulness. Benjamin, along with Pussy Salad who must be what, nearly 90 years old, and Molwyn Joseph, are all antiquated and useless. Molwyn was blaming the citizens for the filth in St. Johns and since he doesn’t live there, it’s not his concern. Give me an asprin! The whole ALP cabal is one corrupt mess of incompetence. They are bad-minded, arrogant and useless. Whew!
An elderly care residence is not a health care facility.
Interesting the attacks against Molwyn. When he proposed a bill to deal with said issue, I recall the opposition via Observer attacking him and essentially arguing it was a none issue. Minister must have no say they argue yet he is responsible for the failings. Biblical philistine and sadducees doublespeak
How is that relevant to him being in charge now to do what is right.
This the same dunce argument they put in a lot of my dunce family’s head or they did it too.
They will never be a change and a better government when supporters continue to say, it is not just Gaston, it is not just Molwyn, it is just not ABLP, justifying the wrongs. Then when UPP enter office, their supporters will say, it is just not this or that.
This is the dunces argument that encourages justification of wrongs and you think I am speaking like this because of a delay of my firearms license. I speak like this because of actual dunces.
Focus on who is in charge and pressure them to do what is right instead of duncely saying, it is just not them being dunces.
You obviously DIDN’T read the article (or even the headline) @ tenman, when Steadroy Benjamin made a “vow” to act on this particular case.
ABLP supporters again defending the indefensible, and excusing the inactions of their cabinet ministers.
This is why the country is rudderless…
The ministry If health is in a sad state. There is the minister of health in all of this? Did you bring it yo his attention. Or is it that you are just doing the usual grandstanding.
The Ministry of Legal Affairs is also in sad state under your watch crime has increased exponentially and too many times the plain criminals get off scotch free because your ministry.
The country finances are also in a bad state. How come Lady Maria is allowed to dip her had in the CIP money taking hundreds of thousands of dollars for the planting of palms on Fries Hill road. Such a stupid idea without proper planning. Talking about the intention was to remove the utility wires. APUA says they were not involved in this scheme- yes a scheme it is young lady. GB as minister of Finance you have squandered the country money- now new taxes. You spent millions trying to keep Shugy out of parliament while out operating theatre and MRI equipment not functioning. You and your family can jump on the plane any moment- the average Antigua cannot. You spending millions on the ALFA Nero while our health clinics sit in the state of disrepair. Poor people are suffering.
You only pay your rich friends Mr.Kickbacks. While the poor contractors that government owes are suffering. You pay them i. Such an untimely manner that almost small every contractor faces bankruptcy and most of them end up in court, unable to pay statutory contributions, taxes and even salaries. Wicked government.
So you guys bragged about your experience in running government. Grade yourself and you will recognize that your experience adds up yo nothing. Poor roads, no water and again making comparisons. All Heath care facilities are in a poor run down state. All government buildings are run down- back to renting from yourself and your rich friends. So you don’t maintain the government buildings, the hospital operating room , the MRI but you find the money to plant palm in such a poorly planned manner.
Anybody can open an “old folks” home in Antigua. Should have to be registered and regulated to do that.
