As the United Progressive Party (UPP) continues to unveil its candidates for the next general elections, and ground work in the constituencies is underway, Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin says he is going to compete for the St. John’s City South seat one more time.
As the sitting Antigua & Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) representative for St. John’s City South, Benjamin will compete against Michael Burton, who is running on the UPP slate for the second time.
Benjamin claims he was contemplating not running again during the last polls, but was encouraged by his constituents to give it another go.
Many persons have complained that Benjamin has done little for the constituents, given the poor roads and other rundown infrastructure that is evident in City South.
But in response, Benjamin claimed that he and the people of that constituency share a bond that can never be broken.
Burton, meanwhile, is convinced that the constituents, including the business-owners operating in downtown St. John’s, would be better off under his stewardship and that of the UPP.
In a recent interview Burton highlighted the derelict state of a community centre in the Belmont area, where Benjamin lives. It was started in the time of Lenworth Johnson, a former UPP candidate, and Burton says he was prevented from cleaning and completing it.
Yet, up to now, he points out, it has been left untended and unfinished by MP Benjamin.
Johnson is also credited with having the first proper roads built in the Belmont community during the UPP’s tenure.

This man need to go retire and play with his grandchildren or be a mentor to young coming up lawyers and politicians. A so greedy he be for power. I hope his opponent clip his wings in the next election.
the WAR VET mikey burton has already said that he will beat Cutie next election.
Very unlikely…..
Politicians always used that ploy about last term, last run etc in desperation. Wonder if that is the case by Mr Benjamin. Then if he wins he remains and remains and remain…you get the picture.
Cutie need to go and rest his old bones. Give another person a chance. This is ABLP and UPP problem. Them full of greedy old selfish people who don’t want to let go of wealth and power. Antigua needs a fresh new political party with more youthful dymanic people
…Term Limits would accomplish, what you’re suggesting! This has to come from the People, not the politicians!
No need for term limits because the PEOPLE ultimately decide.
…………… I never thought I would see the day when I would agree with something you say. On this one I am in total agreement with you. Two other ALP candidates who should be exiting the political stage for younger candidates are Molwyn Joseph and of course Robin Yerawood.
UPP no better then ALP that is why I’m not intetested in niether of them.
I left Antigua 40 plus years ago. That Constituency looked worse now, than before I left Antigua. That man Cutie, not cute at all.He has done absolutely nothing for that Constituency. He shares a bond with the people. While he has gotten richer over the years. Many persons have become poor and poorer in the Constituency.Time for him to go,go now. What have you so called CUTIE done lately.
