Bed At Home Recipients Grateful For RCA’s Kind Gesture

Recipients of the Rotary Club of Antigua’s signature “Bed at Home” Project have expressed heartfelt gratitude for the initiative, which has brought a lot of comfort to those in need.

The project is the brainchild of President Dr. Vanetta Rodgers and targets 20 individuals who are otherwise bedridden or have mobility challenges.

On Wednesday, 17th June, the Club continued its distribution of the hospital bed.

President Rodgers indicated that after fruitful discussions with the President of the Antigua and Barbuda Association of Persons Living with Disabilities, Bernard Warner, three more persons were selected to be beneficiaries.

The persons who were identified and have received the bed are: Dale Fowler of Liberta Village, Leslie Emanuel of Potters Village and Teacher Oslyn Pluck, a resident of Cassada Gardens.

The beds were assembled for each recipient by a team headed by the Club’s Service Projects Director, Rotarian Kirk Francis.

One of the beneficiaries, Leslie Emmanuel, wrote a letter to the Club detailing his thanks for what he described as a timely and necessary donation.

On behalf of my family and I, I am thankful to the Rotary Club of Antigua, for the timely donation of a bed (bedframe and mattress) in recognition of my physical and financial circumstances where equipment of this nature is necessary. The referenced assistive equipment is designed for patients and the care provided by health professionals in medical institutions, for example, the Mount St. John’s Medical Centre. Thankfully, I am not a patient but rather a person with multiple physical disabilities, i.e. complete physical paralysis requiring care at home that also ensures the health of my primary care assistant (PCA) and substitute caregivers.”

Mr. Emmanuel added “it is tremendously encouraging that the Rotary Club of Antigua continues to help the community through an avenue of service as demonstrated in the homes of several persons who received a similar donation from the Rotary Club of Antigua. After over 30 years of physical paralysis, it is heartening to evidence such goodwill from the Organization. Support like this along with the love of my family and friends, promotes my independence that is unquestionably a major factor toward staying positive and productive”.

President of the Antigua and Barbuda Association of Persons Living with Disabilities, Bernard Warner, shared similar sentiments.

“As the President of the Antigua and Barbuda Association of Persons Living with Disabilities, I am indeed happy that our community is being remembered in such a special and meaningful way. There are many challenges that persons with physical abilities encounter and being offered a level of comfort such as what the bed affords, will give a level of peace of mind. We are truly blessed and grateful for this gesture and I can say that this is a positive outlook for further collaboration with the Rotary Club of Antigua. We thank the President, Dr. Rodgers and her team for being such a big blessing to the wider society through its community work and giving back”, he stated.

President Rodgers is humbled by the overwhelming words of gratitude from the recipients and expresses her thanks to the Mill Reef Fund and the general public for supporting fundraising initiatives organized by the Club. She added that the proceeds go a long way to finance important projects to include the Bed at Home initiative.

  1. Were the pictures of these folks in this state necessary? Not every gesture calls for a photo op, and these certainty did not.

Rotary and ANR, please think these charitable events through.

    • I agree, the camera shots were a bit much but madam president does look good (heart, beauty) … Rotary, thank you.
