Barge Purchase Advances Dredging Projects at St. John’s and Crabbs Harbours
Antigua and Barbuda is moving ahead with plans to buy a barge to support dredging at St. John’s and Crabbs harbours, a step officials say is critical to ongoing port expansion.
Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant told reporters at Thursday’s Cabinet press briefing that two barges have been identified, and the government is working to select the most cost-effective option without sacrificing quality.

“Equipment that was procured a few weeks ago cannot function without the barge,” Merchant said. “And so the barge is of necessity to ensure that the dredging continues at the St. John’s Port and also at Crabs.”

The dredging is part of a wider upgrade of port infrastructure that also includes the arrival of a US$6.2 million mobile harbor crane.
Officials say the investment will improve cargo handling and cruise ship capacity, positioning Antigua and Barbuda as a more competitive shipping and tourism hub in the Eastern Caribbean.

The government has also announced plans to relocate the Coast Guard to Camp Blizzard, freeing up waterfront space for future expansion. Together, the upgrades are expected to boost efficiency, attract additional business, and support national revenue growth.
