Minister Fernandez Urges Barbudans to Return and Capitalize on Growing Opportunities
Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez has called on Barbudans living abroad to return home and take advantage of the island’s newfound growth.
He highlighted the significant opportunities arising from Barbuda’s ongoing developments, which he believes will attract many Barbudans back.
“A number of Barbudans left to seek better opportunities elsewhere, but as they see the current developments, they will recognize the entrepreneurial prospects that weren’t available before,” Fernandez remarked.
He emphasized that with the island’s economic expansion, many Barbudans are likely to return during holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, and Independence, to explore new business ventures.
According to Fernandez, Barbuda’s growth will inspire returning residents to establish businesses, such as short-term rental properties and small hotels, which will cater to an increasing number of visitors.
He noted the rise of trends like glamping—luxury camping—as one of many possibilities for entrepreneurial Barbudans to tap into the tourism market.
The minister also mentioned that some long-standing property owners in Barbuda may now expand their operations, realizing the opportunities to meet the demand of a growing tourist base.
“There is a tremendous amount of opportunity for Barbudans and even Antiguans who may want to partner with locals to build businesses,” Fernandez said.
