Barbudans Celebrate Creation of 25 New Jobs as Airport Launches

Barbuda is celebrating a new wave of employment opportunities following the official opening of its modern airport, a project that has already begun to benefit the island’s local economy.

PLH Group Project President Justin Witlshire announced during the inauguration ceremony that the airport’s completion has directly led to the creation of 25 new jobs for Barbudans.

The positions include roles in immigration, security, customs, and general airport operations, offering stable, long-term careers for the island’s residents.

“We now have 25 new careers for Barbudans with this airport,” Wilshire said. He also highlighted additional employment opportunities on the horizon, such as the opening of an FBO (Fixed Base Operator) facility, which will create eight more jobs for Barbudans.

“This is exciting. 10% of Barbuda’s working population will be employed at this airport,” he added, signaling the profound impact on the local workforce.

The creation of jobs has been a crucial aspect of the development, as the airport project was designed not only to enhance the island’s connectivity but also to foster economic growth.

Local contractors played a significant role in bringing the project to completion, reinforcing the collaborative effort between Barbuda and the PLH Group.

The new positions offer young Barbudans career paths that were previously unavailable, allowing them to contribute to the island’s growing tourism and travel industry.

Wilshire emphasized that the airport’s opening would lead to an increase in economic activity on the island, benefiting both local businesses and the Barbuda Council through increased revenue.

“Every hour that travelers stay here brings thousands of dollars into the economy,” Wilshire noted, pointing out the ripple effect the airport will have on Barbuda’s financial security.
