Barbuda Land Dispute Sparks Tensions Between Government and Council

5

Barbuda Council member Devon Warner opposes government plans to sell Barbuda lands, warning of potential civil unrest if communal land ownership is disrupted.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne insists land sales are crucial for economic growth but faces Council resistance due to cultural and ancestral concerns.

Tensions persist as both sides remain at odds over land ownership, with Warner cautioning against the Prime Minister’s approach, fearing civil unrest. Browne asserts the Cabinet’s authority over land matters but vows to uphold law and order.

The dispute stems from the 2015 Paradise Found Act, reigniting the debate over land ownership.

While the Council opposes outright sales, they are open to leasing options, yet a resolution remains elusive.

  1. You all remember 08/08/21 what he did to us!!!! I’m sure he wouldn’t hesitate to do it again or even use military!!!

  2. Leasing is the only option , stop selling your patrimony. You can lease it to the developer, similar arrangement like Mill Reef and we get to save the lands for the next generations.
It was slavery, then colonialism and today we have neocolonialism, which is even more dangerous. Most colonizers are coming back as foreign investors, the same conquer and grab mentality ,nothing has changed. Beware
Save your patrimony my people for the sake of our children children and all the innocent blood of our ancestors spilled from the middle passage to the plantations of their captivity.
    NO LANDS FOR SALE. Traitors

  3. All I want to know is if the court has ruled? If you do not like it all you can do is “lay down beside it.”

  4. Gaston likes the word sell. All he and his people will do is buy up all the prime lands at peppercorn price and resell them to foreigners for millions. If this government didn’t only care about enriching themselves, they would leave the lands for future generations. This government only thinks about corruption and how they can further enrich themselves. When will they stop taking Antiguans and Barbudans for fools. And when will they be satisfied with what they have already pawn up from the people.
