“Barbuda International Airport Expected to Attract 20,000 Visitors Annually, Says PM Browne”
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has projected that the newly opened Barbuda International Airport will attract approximately 20,000 visitors annually within the next two to three years, marking a significant boost to the island’s burgeoning tourism industry.
Speaking at the airport’s opening ceremony, Browne highlighted the critical role the new facility will play in positioning Barbuda as a high-end luxury destination.
“This airport is not just a gateway for travelers; it’s the foundation for a new era of growth and opportunity for Barbuda,” Browne stated. He outlined the airport’s potential to bring a substantial influx of premium visitors, which could transform the island’s economy and further solidify its status as an exclusive destination.
According to Browne, the projected 20,000 visitors will contribute significantly to Barbuda’s tax revenue. The head tax for visitors to Barbuda, set at $200 USD per person, is higher than the rate in Antigua, and Browne believes this will generate around $4 million USD annually.
“You can do the math—20,000 visitors times $200 each. That’s $4 million in just head taxes alone, not counting other contributions from accommodations, services, and real estate,” he added.
The Prime Minister stressed that the airport’s ability to handle increased tourist traffic would be crucial in facilitating the development of luxury resorts and high-end real estate projects currently underway on the island.
He specifically mentioned the Rosewood Hotel and Paradise Found as major investments that would drive visitor numbers even higher once operational.
Browne also emphasized that this influx of high-end tourists would benefit Barbudans directly through increased employment opportunities and economic growth. “With the completion of this airport and other upcoming projects, Barbuda is poised to become a major player in the region’s luxury tourism market,” he said.
This anticipated increase in visitors is part of the government’s broader strategy to transform Barbuda into a self-sustaining economic powerhouse, generating significant revenue from tourism, real estate, and other sectors.
