Barbuda has recognized its first preschool teacher, 80-year-old Bernice Lewis, for more than two decades of service in early childhood education.
Lewis, who began teaching in 1978 and retired in 2000, was celebrated in an emotional ceremony attended by Foreign Affairs and Barbuda Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene and ABLP caretaker Bonneitha John. She is the only retired preschool teacher still living on the island.
Greene and John presented her with a token of appreciation, praising her commitment to shaping young minds and supporting families across Barbuda. Attendees described Lewis as a mentor and community pillar whose influence spans generations.
The event drew former students, relatives, and residents, many of whom highlighted her compassion, resilience, and role in helping build the foundation of early education on the sister island.

John said the recognition aimed to honour individuals whose lifelong work has significantly contributed to Barbuda’s development.

Congratulations Ms. Lewis and thank you for your service. You did great for the children of Barbuda.
Unfortunately once they got to primary and secondary school, the political brainwashing began. They chose to believe the BPM lies about Crown land. The land is vested in the CROWN. Codrington LEASED the land from the CROWN.
Presently, you and your boss have more than land issues to worry about, because he has to fabricate new lies to cover the original lies on the Alfa Nero sale.
Oh shutup RACIST!!!! Leave BLACK people and indigenous Antiguans alone. Worry about your oppressive colonial history instead.
